Translation

✧ Those among the notables who died in this year: ʿUthmān b. Ḥunayf b. Wāhib, ʿUthmān b. Ḥunayf al-Anṣārī al-Awsī, who was the brother of ʿUbādah and Sahl, the two sons of Ḥunayf. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ sent him over the land tax of the Sawād, with a daily provision of a quarter of a sheep and five dirhams, and ordered him to survey the Sawād, and he remained in that post. When ʿUthmān was killed, ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib sent him as governor of Baṣrah, and he remained there until Ṭalḥah and al-Zubayr came against him and he fought them. Then they made peace and wrote among themselves a treaty of non-aggression, stipulating that the governor's residence, the mosque, and the treasury would remain under ʿUthmān b. Ḥunayf, while Ṭalḥah, al-Zubayr, and ʿĀʾishah could settle wherever they wished in Baṣrah. ʿUthmān b. Ḥunayf died during the caliphate of Muʿāwiyah. In the "Musnad" and the "Sunan" he has the ḥadīth of the blind man who asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to supplicate for him so that Allah might restore his eyesight, and Allah restored it. He has another ḥadīth in al-Nasāʾī, and I have not seen anyone date his death to this year except Ibn al-Jawzī. And Allah knows best. In this year ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĀmir died; it is also said in the year fifty-nine. And ʿAbd Allāh b. Qudāmah al-Saʿdī, who was a Companion; it is said he is ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. Waqdān al-Saʿdī. He was called al-Saʿdī because his father was nursed among Banū Saʿd b. Bakr, though he was from Banū ʿĀmir b. Luʾayy. And ʿUthmān b. Shaybah b. Abī Ṭalḥah al-ʿAbdarī, who was the ancestor of Banū Shaybah, the custodians of the Kaʿbah, whose key remains with them to this day. He embraced Islam on the day of the conquest, or it is said on the day of Ḥunayn. And Jubayr b. Muṭʿim b. Nawfal al-Qurashī, a Companion. And Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ; it is said she remained alive until the killing of al-Ḥusayn.
