The caliphate of Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān

وفي سَنَةُ سَبْعٍ وَخَمْسِينَ فِيهَا كَانَ مَشْتَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ بِأَرْضِ الرُّومِ. قَالَ الْوَاقِدِيُّ: وَفِي شَوَّالِهَا عَزَلَ مُعَاوِيَةُ مَرْوَانَ بْنَ الْحَكَمِ عَنِ الْمَدِينَةِ وَوَلَّى عَلَيْهَا الْوَلِيدَ بْنَ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، وَهُوَ الَّذِي حَجَّ بِالنَّاسِ فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ ; لِأَنَّهُ صَارَتْ إِلَيْهِ إِمْرَةُ الْمَدِينَةِ، وَكَانَ عَلَى الْكُوفَةِ الضَّحَّاكُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ، وَعَلَى الْبَصْرَةِ عُبَيْدَ اللَّهِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، وَعَلَى خُرَاسَانَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ.

Translation

✧ The Year 57 AH In it was the winter expedition of ʿAbd Allāh b. Qays in the land of the Byzantines. Al-Wāqidī said: In Shawwāl of it, Muʿāwiyah dismissed Marwān b. al-Ḥakam from Madinah and appointed over it al-Walīd b. ʿUtbah b. Abī Sufyān, and he is the one who led the people in the ḥajj in this year, because the governorship of Madinah came to him. Over al-Kūfah was al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Qays, over al-Baṣrah was ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād, and over Khurāsān was Saʿīd b. ʿUthmān.
