Translation

✧ The appointment of Maslamah b. Mukhallad over Ifrīqiyyah. In the year fifty, Muʿāwiyah b. Ḥudayj was dismissed from Egypt, and Maslamah b. Mukhallad was appointed over Egypt, Ifrīqiyyah, and the entire Maghrib. When Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān dismissed Muʿāwiyah b. Ḥudayj al-Sakūnī from Egypt, he dismissed ʿUqbah from Ifrīqiyyah and combined them for Maslamah b. Mukhallad. He was the first for whom the Maghrib was combined with Egypt. Maslamah appointed over Ifrīqiyyah a freedman of his called Abū al-Muhājir. He arrived in Ifrīqiyyah and mistreated ʿUqbah in his dismissal and belittled him. ʿUqbah traveled to Syria and reproached Muʿāwiyah for what Abū al-Muhājir had done to him. He apologized to him and promised to restore him to his post. Matters continued until Muʿāwiyah died, and after him his son Yazīd assumed power. He appointed ʿUqbah b. Nāfiʿ over the lands in the year sixty-two, and he set out for them. Al-Wāqidī mentioned that ʿUqbah b. Nāfiʿ governed Ifrīqiyyah in the year forty-six and founded al-Qayrawān. ʿUqbah remained over Ifrīqiyyah until the year sixty-two, when Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah dismissed him: And he appointed Abū al-Muhājir, the freedman of the Anṣār, so he imprisoned ʿUqbah and treated him harshly. When news reached Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah of what had been done to ʿUqbah, he wrote to him ordering his release and sending him to him, which he did. ʿUqbah reached Yazīd, who restored him to Ifrīqiyyah as its governor. He seized Abū al-Muhājir and bound him.
