The caliphate of Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān
وَفِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ غَزَا الْحَكَمُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو نَائِبُ زِيَادٍ عَلَى خُرَاسَانَ جَبَلَ الْأَشَلِّ ، عَنْ أَمْرِ زِيَادٍ، فَقَتَلَ مِنْهُمْ خَلْقًا كَثِيرًا، وَغَنِمَ أَمْوَالًا جَمَّةً، فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ زِيَادٌ: إِنَّ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ قَدْ جَاءَ كِتَابَهُ أَنَّ يُصْطَفَى لَهُ كُلُّ صَفْرَاءَ وَبَيْضَاءَ - يَعْنِي الذَّهَبَ وَالْفِضَّةَ - يُجْمَعُ كُلُّهُ مِنْ هَذِهِ الْغَنِيمَةِ لِبَيْتِ الْمَالِ. فَكَتَبَ الْحَكَمُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو إِلَيْهِ: إِنَّ كِتَابَ اللَّهِ مُقَدَّمٌ عَلَى كِتَابِ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، وَإِنَّهُ وَاللَّهِ لَوْ كَانَتِ السَّمَاوَاتُ وَالْأَرْضُ عَلَى عَبْدٍ فَاتَّقَى اللَّهَ، لَجَعَلَ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا. ثُمَّ نَادَى فِي النَّاسِ أَنِ اغْدُوَا عَلَى قَسْمِ غَنِيمَتِكُمْ. فَقَسَّمَهَا بَيْنَهُمْ، وَخَالَفَ زِيَادًا فِيمَا كَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ، وَعَزَلَ الْخُمُسَ كَمَا أَمَرَ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ ﷺ، ثُمَّ قَالَ الْحَكَمُ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كَانَ لِي عِنْدَكَ خَيْرٌ فَاقْبِضْنِي إِلَيْكَ. فَمَاتَ بِمَرْوَ مِنْ خُرَاسَانَ، ؓ.
Translation
✧ And in this year al-Ḥakam b. ʿAmr, the deputy of Ziyād over Khurasan, raided Mount al-Ashall by the order of Ziyād. He killed many of them and captured abundant wealth. Ziyād wrote to him: “The Commander of the Faithful has sent his letter that every yellow and white thing—meaning gold and silver—be selected for him, all of it to be gathered from this booty for the public treasury.” Al-Ḥakam b. ʿAmr wrote back to him: “The Book of Allah takes precedence over the letter of the Commander of the Faithful. By Allah, if the heavens and the earth were closing in upon a servant and he feared Allah, He would make for him a way out.” Then he called out among the people: “Go forth to the division of your booty.” He divided it among them, opposed Ziyād in what he had written to him on behalf of Muʿāwiyah, and set aside the fifth as Allah and His Messenger ﷺ commanded. Then al-Ḥakam said: “O Allah, if I have any good with You, then take me to You.” And he died in Marw in Khurasan, ؓ.
