Translation

✧ The Expedition against Constantinople In the year forty-nine, and it is said: the year fifty, Muʿāwiyah dispatched a massive army to the lands of the Byzantines for a campaign and placed over them Sufyān b. ʿAwf, and he ordered his son Yazīd to campaign with them, but he tarried and feigned illness, so his father held back from him. The people suffered severe hunger and illness in their campaign, so Yazīd began to recite: Little do I care what their masses encountered at al-Ghazqadhūnah of fever and of plague, when I recline upon the cushions, leaning comfortably at Dayr Murrān, with me Umm Kulthūm. And Umm Kulthūm was his wife, and she was the daughter of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĀmir. His poetry reached Muʿāwiyah, so he swore an oath that he would indeed join Sufyān in the land of the Byzantines, so that whatever afflicted the people would afflict him. So he marched, and with him was a large contingent that his father added to him. In this army were Ibn ʿAbbās, Ibn ʿUmar, Ibn al-Zubayr, Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī, and others, and ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Zurārah al-Kilābī. They penetrated deep into the lands of the Byzantines until they reached Constantinople. The Muslims and the Byzantines fought on some days, and the battle intensified between them. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz kept exposing himself to martyrdom but was not killed, so he began to recite: I have lived through time in varied states upon diverse paths, and I have encountered from it both softness and harshness. All of it I have tested; neither does prosperity make me insolent, nor do I endure from its hardships any alarm. The matter does not fill my breast before it occurs, nor do I become distressed by it when it befalls. Then he charged at those near him and killed among them and plunged into their midst, and the Byzantines pierced him with their spears until they killed him, may God have mercy on him. News of his killing reached Muʿāwiyah, so he said to his father: By God, the youth of the Arabs has perished! He said: My son or your son? He said: Your son, so may God reward you. He said: If death has carried him off and the marrow of al-Kilābī has become a guest, then every youth drinks his cup, whether small or great. Then Yazīd and the army returned to Syria. It is established in "Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī" that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "The first army that raids the city of Caesar will be forgiven." So this army was the first to raid it, and they did not reach it until they had reached the utmost exhaustion. In this year died Abū Ayyūb Khālid b. Zayd al-Anṣārī, and it is said: he did not die in this campaign, but rather after it in the year fifty-one, or fifty-two, or fifty-three. He was buried near its wall, and its people seek rain through him.
