Translation

✧ In this year Umm Ḥabībah bt. Abī Sufyān, Mother of the Believers, died. Her name was Ramlah, the sister of Muʿāwiyah. She embraced Islam early and migrated with her husband ʿUbayd Allāh b. Jaḥsh to the land of Abyssinia. There her husband became a Christian, while she remained firm in her religion, ؓ. Ḥabībah was the eldest of her children by him, born to her in Abyssinia. It is said: in Makkah before the Hijrah. Her husband died there, may God curse him and disfigure him. When she became a widow after her husband, the Messenger of God ﷺ sent ʿAmr b. Umayyah al-Ḍamrī to the Negus, and he married her to him. Khālid b. Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ acted as guardian for the contract, and the Negus paid her dowry on his behalf, four hundred dinars, and sent her to him in the year seven. When her father came in the year of the conquest to confirm the marriage, he entered upon her, and she folded away from him the bed of the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said to her: "By God, O my little daughter, I do not know whether you prefer this bed over me or me over it?!" She said: "Rather, it is the bed of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and you are a polytheist man." He said to her: "By God, O my little daughter, you have met after me with evil." She was one of the noble women among the Mothers of the Believers and one of the devout, pious worshippers, ؓ. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar al-Wāqidī said: with his chain of transmission, from ʿAwf b. al-Ḥārith, who said: I heard ʿĀʾishah say: Umm Ḥabībah called me at the time of her death and said: "There may be between us what occurs between co-wives." I said: "May God forgive me and you for all of that, and may He overlook it and absolve you." She said: "You have gladdened me; may God gladden you." She also sent to Umm Salamah, and she said to her the like of that.
