The caliphate of Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān

✧ The dismissal of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĀmir from al-Baṣrah In the year forty-four, Muʿāwiyah dismissed ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĀmir from the governorship of al-Baṣrah; that was because corruption had appeared there due to his leniency; for he was gentle-natured, easy-going, and generous, and he would not restrain the foolish nor cut off a thief, and he wanted to win people over, so al-Baṣrah became corrupt because of that. Ibn Jarīr said: ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĀmir complained to Ziyād about the corruption of the people, and he said: "Draw the sword among them." Ibn ʿĀmir said: "I dislike setting them right by corrupting myself." He said: Then ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Awfā, known as Ibn al-Kawwāʾ, went and complained about him to Muʿāwiyah, so Muʿāwiyah dismissed Ibn ʿĀmir from al-Baṣrah and sent al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Azdī there. It is also said that Muʿāwiyah summoned him to visit him, and Ibn ʿĀmir came to Muʿāwiyah in Damascus, and he honored him and sent him back to his post. When he bid him farewell, Muʿāwiyah said to him: "Three things I ask of you, so say: 'They are yours.'" He said: "They are yours, and I am the son of Umm Ḥakīm." Muʿāwiyah said: "Return my office to me and do not be angry." Ibn ʿĀmir said: "I have done so." He said: "And give me your property in ʿArafah." He said: "I have done so." He said: "And give me your houses in Makkah." He said: "I have done so." Then Muʿāwiyah said to him: "May kinship ties reward you." Ibn ʿĀmir said: "O Commander of the Faithful, I too ask you three things, so say: 'They are yours.'" He said: "They are yours, and I am the son of Hind." He said: "Return to me my property in ʿArafah." He said: "I have done so." He said: "And do not call any of my agents to account for me, nor follow up any trace for me." He said: "I have done so." He said: "And marry me to your daughter Hind." He said: "I have done so." It is also said that Muʿāwiyah gave him the choice between these three things and the governorship of al-Baṣrah, and he chose these three things and withdrew from al-Baṣrah. And he appointed al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Azdī over al-Baṣrah.
