The caliphate of Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān
وَفي سنة أربع وأربعين غَزَا بُسْرُ بْنُ أَبِي أَرْطَأَةَ الْبَحْرَ قَالَ عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عُمَيْرٍ: قَرَأْتُ فِي دِيوَانِ مُعَاوِيَةَ [بَعْدَ مَوْتِهِ ] كِتَابًا مِنْ مَلِكِ الصِّينِ، فِيهِ: مِنْ مَلِكِ الصِّينِ الَّذِي عَلَى مِرْبَطِهِ أَلْفُ فِيلٍ، وَبُنِيَتْ دَارُهُ بِلَبِنِ الذَّهَبِ وَالْفِضَّةِ، وَيَخْدِمُهُ بَنَاتُ أَلْفِ مَلِكٍ، وَالَّذِي لَهُ نَهْرَانِ يَسْقِيَانِ الْأَلْوَةَ، إِلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ.
Translation
✧ In the year forty-four, Busr b. Abī Arṭaʾah raided by sea. ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr said: I read in Muʿāwiyah’s register [after his death] a letter from the king of China, in which was: From the king of China, who has a thousand elephants at his tethering post, whose house is built with bricks of gold and silver, whom the daughters of a thousand kings serve, and who has two rivers that water the aloes wood, to Muʿāwiyah.
