The caliphate of Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān
مُعَيْنٍ الْخَارِجِيِّ وَبَلَغَ الْمُغِيرَةَ أَنَّ مُعَيْنَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يُرِيدُ الْخُرُوجَ، وَهُوَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ مُحَارِبٍ، وَكَانَ اسْمُهُ مَعْنًا فَصُغِّرَ، فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ، وَعِنْدَهُ جَمَاعَةٌ، فَأُخِذَ وَحُبِسَ، وَبَعَثَ الْمُغِيرَةُ إِلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ يُخْبِرُهُ أَمْرَهُ، فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ: إِنْ شَهِدَ أَنِّي خَلِيفَةٌ فَخَلِّ سَبِيلَهُ. فَأَحْضَرَهُ الْمُغِيرَةُ وَقَالَ لَهُ: أَتَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُعَاوِيَةَ خَلِيفَةٌ وَأَنَّهُ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ؟ فَقَالَ: أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ اللَّهَ، عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، حَقٌّ، وَأَنَّ السَّاعَةَ آتِيَةٌ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهَا، وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَبْعَثُ مَنْ فِي الْقُبُورِ. فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَقُتِلَ، قَتَلَهُ قَبِيصَةُ الْهِلَالِيُّ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ أَيَّامَ بِشْرِ بْنِ مَرْوَانَ جَلَسَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْخَوَارِجِ عَلَى بَابِ قَبِيصَةَ حَتَّى خَرَجَ فَقَتَلَهُ، وَلَمْ يُعْرَفْ قَاتِلُهُ حَتَّى خَرَجَ قَاتِلُهُ مَعَ شَبِيبِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ الْكُوفَةَ قَالَ: يَا أَعْدَاءَ اللَّهِ أَنَا قَاتِلُ قَبِيصَةَ !
Translation
✧ Muʿīn al-Khārijī It reached al-Mughīrah that Muʿīn b. ʿAbd Allāh intended to rebel. He was a man from Muḥārib, and his name was Maʿn but it was made diminutive. Al-Mughīrah sent for him while a group was with him. He was seized and imprisoned. Al-Mughīrah sent to Muʿāwiyah informing him of his affair. He wrote to him: "If he testifies that I am caliph, then release him." Al-Mughīrah brought him and said to him: "Do you testify that Muʿāwiyah is caliph and that he is Commander of the Believers?" He said: "I testify that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is true, and that the Hour is coming, there is no doubt about it, and that Allah will resurrect those in the graves." So he ordered him to be killed. Qabīṣah al-Hilālī killed him. Later, in the days of Bishr b. Marwān, a man from the Khawārij sat at the door of Qabīṣah until he came out, then killed him. His killer was not known until his killer went out with Shabīb b. Yazīd. When he came to al-Kūfah, he said: "O enemies of Allah, I am the killer of Qabīṣah!"
