The caliphate of Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān
شَبِيبِ بْنِ بَجَرَةَ كَانَ شَبِيبٌ مَعَ ابْنِ مُلْجَمٍ حِينَ قَتَلَ عَلِيًّا، فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ مُعَاوِيَةُ الْكُوفَةَ أَتَاهُ شَبِيبٌ كَالْمُتَقَرِّبِ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ: أَنَا وَابْنُ مُلْجَمٍ قَتَلْنَا عَلِيًّا، فَوَثَبَ مُعَاوِيَةُ مِنْ مَجْلِسِهِ مَذْعُورًا حَتَّى دَخَلَ مَنْزِلَهُ وَبَعَثَ إِلَى أَشْجَعَ وَقَالَ: لَئِنْ رَأَيْتُ شَبِيبًا أَوْ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّهُ بِبَابِي لَأُهْلِكَنَّكُمْ، أَخْرِجُوهُ عَنْ بَلَدِكُمْ. وَكَانَ شَبِيبٌ إِذَا جَنَّ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلُ خَرَجَ فَلَمْ يَلْقَ أَحَدًا إِلَّا قَتَلَهُ، فَلَمَّا وَلِيَ الْمُغِيرَةُ الْكُوفَةَ خَرَجَ عَلَيْهِ بِالْقُفِّ، قَرِيبِ الْكُوفَةِ، فَبَعَثَ إِلَيْهِ الْمُغِيرَةُ خَيْلًا عَلَيْهَا خَالِدُ بْنُ عُرْفُطَةَ، وَقِيلَ: مَعْقِلُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ، فَاقْتَتَلُوا فَقُتِلَ شَبِيبٌ وَأَصْحَابُهُ.
Translation
✧ Shabīb b. Bajarah Shabīb was with Ibn Muljam when he killed ʿAlī. When Muʿāwiyah entered al-Kūfah, Shabīb came to him as one seeking to draw near to him and said: "I and Ibn Muljam killed ʿAlī." Muʿāwiyah sprang up from his seat in alarm until he entered his house, and he sent to Ashjaʿ and said: "If I see Shabīb or it reaches me that he is at my door, I will surely destroy you. Expel him from your town." And Shabīb, when night fell upon him, would go out and would meet no one but he killed him. Then when al-Mughīrah governed al-Kūfah, Shabīb rebelled against him at al-Quff, near al-Kūfah. Al-Mughīrah sent against him cavalry under Khālid b. ʿUrfuṭah—and it is said: Maʿqil b. Qays—and they fought, and Shabīb and his companions were killed.
