✧ The exit of Ḥawtharah b. Dhirāʿ When Ibn Abī al-Ḥawsāʾ was killed, the Khawārij gathered and appointed over their affair Ḥawtharah b. Dhirāʿ b. Masʿūd al-Asadī. He arose among them and criticized Farwah b. Nawfal for his doubt about fighting ʿAlī, called the Khawārij, and marched from Barāz al-Rūz, where he was, until he arrived at al-Nukhaylah with one hundred and fifty. The remnant of Ibn Abī al-Ḥawsāʾ, who were few, joined him. Muʿāwiyah summoned Abū Ḥawtharah and said to him: "Go out to your son; perhaps he will soften when he sees you." He went out to him, spoke with him, adjured him, and said: "Shall I bring your son to you, so that perhaps when you see him you will dislike parting from him?" He said: "I am more eager for a spear-thrust from the hand of an unbeliever, in which I will writhe for an hour, than I am for my son." His father returned and told Muʿāwiyah of his words. Muʿāwiyah sent against them ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAwf al-Aḥmar with two thousand, and Abū Ḥawtharah went out among those who went out and called his son to single combat. He said: "O father, you have ample scope in other than me." Ibn ʿAwf fought them and they held firm. Ḥawtharah challenged ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAwf to single combat, and Ibn ʿAwf thrust at him and killed him, and killed his companions except fifty who entered al-Kūfah. That was in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of the year forty-one. Ibn ʿAwf saw on Ḥawtharah's face the mark of prostration, and he was a man of worship, so he regretted killing him and said: I killed a brother of Banū Asad in folly; by the life of my father, I have not attained right guidance. I killed one who prayed, reviving the night, long in sorrow, possessed of piety and moderation. I killed a brother of piety; may he not attain this world, and that is due to my wretchedness and the stumbling of my fortune. Grant me repentance, O Lord, and forgive what I have committed, of error and of intent.
