The caliphate of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib
وَصُورَةُ الْوَصِيَّةِ: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ، هَذَا مَا أَوْصَى بِهِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ; أَنَّهُ يَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ، أَرْسَلَهُ بِالْهُدَى وَدِينِ الْحَقِّ لِيُظْهِرَهُ عَلَى الدِّينِ كُلِّهِ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ، ثُمَّ إِنَّ صِلَاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَبِذَلِكَ أُمِرْتُ وَأَنَا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، أُوصِيكَ يَا حَسَنُ وَجَمِيعَ وَلَدِي وَأَهْلِي وَمَنْ بَلَغَهُ كِتَابِي بِتَقْوَى اللَّهِ رَبِّكُمْ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنْتُمْ مُسْلِمُونَ، وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ ﷺ يَقُولُ " إِنَّ صَلَاحَ ذَاتِ الْبَيْنِ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ عَامَّةِ الصَّلَاةِ وَالصِّيَامِ ". انْظُرُوا إِلَى ذَوِي أَرْحَامِكُمْ فَصِلُوهُمْ يُهَوِّنِ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمُ الْحِسَابَ، اللَّهَ اللَّهَ فِي الْأَيْتَامِ ; فَلَا تُعْفُوا أَفَوَاهَهُمْ وَلَا يُضَيَّعُنَّ بِحَضْرَتِكُمْ، وَاللَّهَ اللَّهَ فِي جِيرَانِكُمْ ; فَإِنَّهُمْ وَصِيَّةُ نَبِيِّكُمْ ﷺ، مَا زَالَ يُوصِي بِهِمْ حَتَّى ظَنَنَّا أَنَّهُ سَيُورَثِّهُمْ، وَاللَّهَ اللَّهَ فِي الْقُرْآنِ ; فَلَا يَسْبِقَنَّكُمْ إِلَى الْعَمَلِ بِهِ غَيْرُكُمْ، وَاللَّهَ اللَّهَ فِي الصَّلَاةِ ; فَإِنَّهَا عَمُودُ دِينِكُمْ، وَاللَّهَ اللَّهَ فِي بَيْتِ رَبِّكُمْ، فَلَا يَخْلُوَنَّ مِنْكُمْ مَا بَقِيتُمْ ; فَإِنَّهُ إِنْ تُرِكَ لَمْ تُنَاظَرُوا، وَاللَّهَ اللَّهَ فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ ; فَإِنَّ صِيَامَهُ جُنَّةٌ مِنَ النَّارِ، وَاللَّهَ اللَّهَ فِي الْجِهَادِ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ بِأَمْوَالِكُمْ وَأَنْفُسِكُمْ، وَاللَّهَ اللَّهَ فِي الزَّكَاةِ ; فَإِنَّهَا تُطْفِئُ غَضَبَ الرَّبِّ، وَاللَّهَ اللَّهَ فِي ذِمَّةِ نَبِيِّكُمْ ; لَا تُظْلَمَنَّ بَيْنَ ظَهْرَانَيْكُمْ، وَاللَّهَ اللَّهَ فِي أَصْحَابِ نَبِيِّكُمْ ; فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَوْصَى بِهِمْ، وَاللَّهَ اللَّهَ فِي الْفُقَرَاءِ وَالْمَسَاكِينِ فَأَشْرِكُوهُمْ فِي مَعَاشِكُمْ، وَاللَّهَ اللَّهَ فِيمَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ، فَإِنَّ آخِرَ مَا تَكَلَّمَ بِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ قَالَ: " أُوصِيكُمْ بِالضَّعِيفَيْنِ ; نِسَائِكُمْ وَمَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ ". الصَّلَاةَ الصَّلَاةَ، لَا تَخَافُنَّ فِي اللَّهِ لَوْمَةَ لَائِمٍ يَكْفِكُمْ مَنْ أَرَادَكُمْ وَبَغَى عَلَيْكُمْ، وَقُولُوا لِلنَّاسِ حُسْنًا كَمَا أَمَرَكُمُ اللَّهُ، وَلَا تَتْرُكُوا الْأَمْرَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَالنَّهْيَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ، فَيُوَلَّى الْأَمْرَ شِرَارُكُمْ ثُمَّ تَدْعُونَ فَلَا يُسْتَجَابُ لَكُمْ، وَعَلَيْكُمْ بِالتَّوَاصُلِ وَالتَّبَاذُلِ، وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالتَّدَابُرَ وَالتَّقَاطُعَ وَالتَّفَرُّقَ، وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَى وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ، وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ حَفِظَكُمُ اللَّهُ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتٍ، وَحَفِظَ فِيكُمْ نَبِيَّكُمْ، أَسْتَوْدِعُكُمُ اللَّهَ، وَأَقْرَأُ عَلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامَ وَرَحْمَةَ اللَّهِ. ثُمَّ لَمْ يَنْطِقْ إِلَّا بِلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، حَتَّى قُبِضَ فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ.
Translation
✧ The form of the testament: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This is what ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib has bequeathed: He bears witness that there is no god but Allah alone, without partner, and that Muḥammad is His servant and Messenger. He sent him with guidance and the religion of truth to make it prevail over all religion, even though the polytheists dislike it. Then, indeed my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds, with no partner. And with this I have been commanded, and I am of the Muslims. I enjoin you, O Ḥasan, and all my children and my family and whoever my testament reaches, to fear Allah, your Lord, and do not die except as Muslims. And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. For I heard Abū al-Qāsim ﷺ say: "Indeed, reconciling between people is better than general prayer and fasting." Look to your kin, so maintain ties with them; Allah will make the reckoning easy for you. Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding the orphans: do not neglect their mouths (feeding them), and let them not be lost in your presence. Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding your neighbors, for they are the testament of your Prophet ﷺ; he kept enjoining concerning them until we thought he would make them heirs. Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding the Qurʾān, so let no one outdo you in acting upon it. Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding prayer, for it is the pillar of your religion. Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding the House of your Lord, so do not leave it empty as long as you remain; for if it is abandoned, you will not be granted respite. Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding the month of Ramaḍān, for its fasting is a shield from the Fire. Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding striving in the cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives. Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding zakāh, for it extinguishes the anger of the Lord. Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding the covenant of your Prophet; let no one be wronged among you. Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding the companions of your Prophet, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ enjoined concerning them. Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding the poor and the needy, so include them in your sustenance. Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding those whom your right hands possess, for the last thing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke was: "I enjoin you regarding the two weak ones: your women and those whom your right hands possess." Prayer, prayer. Do not fear the blame of any blamer concerning Allah; He will suffice you against those who wish you harm and transgress against you. And speak kindly to people as Allah has commanded you. Do not abandon enjoining good and forbidding evil, lest the wicked among you be given authority, and then you call upon Allah and are not answered. You must maintain mutual connection and mutual giving. Beware of turning away from one another, severing ties, and division. And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. Fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in punishment. May Allah preserve you as a household and preserve your Prophet among you. I entrust you to Allah, and I bid you peace and the mercy of Allah. Then he did not utter anything except "there is no god but Allah" until he passed away in the month of Ramaḍān.
