وَعَنْ عَمَّارِ بْنِ يَاسِرٍ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ وَهُوَ يَسِيرُ إِلَى صِفِّينَ عَلَى شَطِّ الْفُرَاتِ: اللَّهُمَّ لَوْ أَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ أَرْضَى لَكَ عَنِّي أَنْ أَرْمِيَ بِنَفْسِيِّ مِنْ هَذَا الْجَبَلِ ✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year Al-Rabīʿ bt. Muʿawwidh b. ʿAfrāʾ Al-Rabīʿ bt. Muʿawwidh b. ʿAfrāʾ She embraced Islam and gave allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and narrated from him. She used to go on military expeditions with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, serving the people and bringing the slain and wounded back to Madinah. Khabbāb b. al-Aratt b. Jandalah Khabbāb b. al-Aratt b. Jandalah He had been taken captive and was sold in Makkah, and Umm Anmār, the mother of Sibāʿ al-Khuzāʿiyyah, purchased him. It is said: Rather, Umm Sibāʿ b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā is one and the same, and she was a circumciser in Makkah. She is the one Hamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib meant when he said to Sibāʿ b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā and his mother Umm Anmār: "Come here, O son of the cutter of clitorises!" Thus Khabbāb b. al-Aratt attached himself to the family of Sibāʿ, and he claimed alliance with Banū Zuhrah for this reason. His kunyah was Abū ʿAbd Allāh, and he embraced Islam before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the house of al-Arqam and before he called people to Islam there. He was among the oppressed who were tortured in Makkah to make them renounce their religion. He witnessed Badr and all the battles with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. From al-Shaʿbī, who said: Khabbāb b. al-Aratt entered upon ʿUmar, and he seated him on his own cushion and said: "There is no one on earth more entitled to this seat than this man, except one man." Khabbāb said to him: "Who is he, O Commander of the Faithful?" He said: "Bilāl." Khabbāb said: "O Commander of the Faithful, he is not more entitled than I. Bilāl had among the polytheists someone through whom Allah protected him, but I had no one to protect me. I remember a day when they seized me, lit a fire for me, then threw me into it, and then a man placed his foot on my chest, and I felt nothing of the ground except with my back." He said: Then he uncovered his back, and it had become leprous. And from Ṭāriq b. Shihāb, who said: A group of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ visited Khabbāb and said: "Rejoice, O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, you will meet your brothers tomorrow." He wept and said: "[It is about my condition], indeed I am not grieved, but you reminded me of people whom you called my brothers. Those passed away with their rewards intact, and I fear that the reward of the deeds you mention may be what we have been given after them." Khabbāb died in al-Kūfah in this year at the age of seventy-three, and he was the first to be buried outside al-Kūfah. Khuzaymah b. Thābit b. al-Fākih Khuzaymah b. Thābit b. al-Fākih b. Thaʿlabah b. ʿĀmir, Abū ʿImārah, and he is Dhū al-Shahādatayn (the one with two testimonies): From ʿImārah b. Khuzaymah b. Thābit, from his uncle—who was among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—that the Prophet ﷺ bought a horse from a Bedouin man. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him to follow him so he could give him its price. The Prophet ﷺ walked quickly while the Bedouin walked slowly. Men began meeting the Bedouin and haggling with him over the horse, not knowing that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had already bought it, until one of them offered the Bedouin more than the price the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had paid. When he outbid, the Bedouin called out to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: "If you are buying this horse, then buy it; otherwise I will sell it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stopped when he heard the Bedouin's words, until the Bedouin came to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Did I not buy it from you?" The Bedouin said: "No, by Allah, I did not sell it to you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Yes, I bought it from you." People began gathering around the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Bedouin as they argued back and forth. The Bedouin kept saying: "Bring a witness who will testify for you." Whenever a Muslim came, he said to the Bedouin: "Woe to you! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would never say anything but the truth," until Khuzaymah b. Thābit came and listened to the exchange between the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Bedouin. The Bedouin kept saying: "Bring a witness who will testify that I sold it to you." Khuzaymah said: "I testify that you sold it to him." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to Khuzaymah and said: "On what basis do you testify?" He said: "By affirming your truthfulness, O Messenger of Allah." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made Khuzaymah's testimony equal to the testimony of two men. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: The brother of Khuzaymah who narrated this hadith was not named for us. He had two brothers; one was called Waḥwaḥ and had no descendants, and ʿAbd Allāh, who had descendants. In another report, he said: "I believe you regarding the news of heaven, so shall I not believe you regarding what you say?" Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: He carried the banner of Banū Khaṭmah on the day of the conquest, and he witnessed Ṣiffīn with ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ, and he was killed on that day. Safīnah, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ Safīnah—the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—his name was Mihrān, and his kunyah was Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān: Umm Salamah purchased him and freed him, stipulating that he serve the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as long as he lived. From Saʿīd b. Juhmān, who said: I asked Safīnah about his name, and he said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ named me Safīnah (ship)." I said: "Why did he name you Safīnah?" He said: "He went out with his companions, and their baggage became heavy for them. He said to me: 'Spread your cloak for me.' So I spread it, and they put their baggage in it, then loaded it on me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: 'Carry it, for you are but a ship.'" From Safīnah, that he boarded a ship at sea, and it broke with them. He said: "I clung to a piece of it until I reached an island, and there was a lion there. I said: 'O Abū al-Ḥārith, I am but Safīnah, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' It lowered its head and began pushing me with its sides, guiding me to the path. When I reached the path, it made a sound and I thought it was bidding me farewell." Suḥaym, the slave of Banū al-Ḥisḥās Suḥaym, the slave of Banū al-Ḥisḥās: ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĀmir purchased him and gave him as a gift to ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān, who returned him and said: "We have no need of him." He has many poems and accounts. Muḥammad b. Khalaf narrated to us, saying: Ibn al-Aʿrābī said: Suḥaym was an Abyssinian and lived in the pre-Islamic era. From Yūsuf b. al-Mājishūn, who said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Rabīʿah bought Suḥaym, the slave of Banū al-Ḥasḥās, and wrote to ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān: "I have bought for you an Abyssinian slave who is a poet." ʿUthmān wrote to him: "I have no need of him. The utmost of a slave poet is that if he is full, he makes love poetry about their women, and if he is hungry, he satirizes them." So ʿAbd Allāh returned him, and a man from Banū al-Ḥasḥās bought him. He was an Abyssinian with a non-Arab tongue who recited poetry. Al-Zubayr said: ʿUmar b. Abī Bakr narrated to me, from Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Faqʿasī, who said: Suḥaym was a slave of Banū al-Ḥasḥās, an Abyssinian poet. He loved the daughter of his master, ʿUmīrah bt. Abī Maʿbad, and he alluded to his love for her until his master Abū Maʿbad went on a journey, taking him along. Abū Maʿbad longed for his daughter and said: "ʿUmīrah, bid farewell if you prepare to depart in the morning," [repeating the hemistich and adding nothing to it, then he said: "Go away, O Suḥaym," which stirred what was hidden in him, and he said: "ʿUmīrah, bid farewell if you prepare to depart in the morning] — old age and Islam are enough to restrain a man." Then he built upon it and completed it as a poem, and he was obscene in it, saying: "We spent the night, our two pillows [toward a rugged mound and a sand dune that the winds drifted gently], She made me rest on a palm and bent over me with a wrist, And she drew her leg behind me. A cold north wind blew at the end of the night, And there was no cover but her shift and my cloak. My garment remained fragrant from her scent Until the year turned, and the garment wore out." He said: Then Abū Maʿbad took him to Madinah to sell him there. After he brought him there, he said: "I never feared that Maʿbad would sell me For anything, even if his fingertips became empty. Your brother, the master of your wealth, and your foster son, And one who stayed among you and lived with you for a long time. Is it longing, while not even a night has passed for me? How then when the mounts travel with us for ten nights?" He said: He felt compassion for him and returned him. The matter of Suḥaym ended with him loving a woman from the household of his master, so they seized him and burned him. Ibn Qutaybah said: They gave him wine to drink and presented women to him. When the one he was accused of loving passed by him, he leaned toward her, and they killed him. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Arqam ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Arqam b. ʿAbd Yaghūth [b. Wahb] b. ʿAbd Manāf b. Zuhrah: He embraced Islam on the day of the conquest, and he wrote for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and for Abū Bakr ؓ. A letter was written to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: "Who will answer?" Ibn al-Arqam said: "I will." So he answered on his behalf, then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he was pleased with it and sent it. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ admired that and said: "He hit upon what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ intended." That remained in his heart, so when ʿUmar became caliph, he appointed him over the treasury. ʿUmar said: "I have never seen anyone more fearful of Allah than him." From Umm Bakr bt. al-Manṣūr, from her father, who said: ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb appointed ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Arqam al-Zuhrī over the treasury of the Muslims. ʿUmar ؓ used to borrow from the treasury, and when the stipends were distributed, ʿAbd Allāh would come and demand repayment, and he would pay him back. When ʿUthmān became caliph, he kept him in charge of the treasury, and he used to borrow from it and then repay, like ʿUmar. Then a large amount of money accumulated with ʿUthmān, and the time for distributing stipends came. ʿAbd Allāh said to him: "Pay back the money you borrowed." ʿUthmān said to him: "What is it to you? You are only a treasurer." So ʿAbd Allāh went out until he stood on the pulpit and shouted to the people. They gathered, and he informed them of what ʿUthmān had said and said: "These are the keys to your treasury." Ibn al-Jawzī said: When he returned the keys, ʿUthmān appointed Zayd b. Thābit as treasurer. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khabbāb b. al-Aratt ʿAbd Allāh b. Khabbāb b. al-Aratt b. Jandalah b. Saʿd b. Khuzaymah: He was born during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he was described as good and righteous. He came to al-Madāʾin, and the Khawārij killed him at al-Nahrawān. His house was on the bank of the river. The Khawārij brought him out of his house and said: "Narrate to us a hadith that your father narrated to you, which he heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said: "My father narrated to me that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'There will be a tribulation in which the one sitting is better than the one standing, and the one standing is better than the one walking.'" They brought him to the water and slaughtered him like a sheep is slaughtered. His blood flowed into the water like a strap, and it did not mix (madhqarra). Al-Ḥakam said: I asked Abū Ayyūb: "What is madhqarra?" He said: "It did not mix." He said: And they brought out his umm walad and split open what was in her belly. Then ʿAlī ؓ fought them and killed them. ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd b. Abī Sarḥ ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd b. Abī Sarḥ b. al-Ḥārith b. Ḥabīb b. Khuzaymah: He embraced Islam early. Muḥammad b. Saʿd narrated to us, saying: ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd embraced Islam early, and he used to write down the revelation for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Sometimes the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would dictate to him: "All-Hearing, All-Knowing," and he would write "All-Knowing, All-Wise." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would read it and approve it. Then ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd was tempted, and he said: "Muḥammad does not know what he says. I write for him whatever I wish. This is what is revealed to me just as it is revealed to Muḥammad." He fled from Madinah to Makkah as an apostate. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared his blood lawful on the day of the conquest. He came to ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān—who was his foster brother—and said: "O my brother, by Allah, I have chosen you over others. Hide me here and go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and speak to him about me. If Muḥammad sees me, he will strike what is in my eyes, for my crime is the greatest of crimes, and I have come repentant." ʿUthmān said: "Rather, come with me." He said: "By Allah, if he sees me, he will strike my neck, for he has declared my blood lawful, and his companions are seeking me everywhere." ʿUthmān said: "Come with me, and he will not kill you, if Allah wills." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was startled only by ʿUthmān holding the hand of ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Sarḥ, standing before him. ʿUthmān approached the Prophet ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of Allah, his mother used to carry me and make him walk, nurse me and wean him, and she was kind to me and left him, so grant him to me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from him. Whenever the Prophet ﷺ turned his face away, ʿUthmān would face him and repeat this speech. The Prophet ﷺ turned away only desiring that a man would rise and strike his neck, because he had not granted him safety. When he saw that no one would rise, and ʿUthmān had leaned over the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kissing his head and saying: "O Messenger of Allah, accept his allegiance, may my father and mother be your ransom," the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Yes." Then he turned to his companions and said: "What prevented one of you from rising against this dog and killing him?"—or he said: "this sinner." ʿAbbād b. Bishr said: "Why did you not gesture to me, O Messenger of Allah? By the One who sent you with the truth, I was following your gaze from every direction, hoping that you would indicate to me and I would strike his neck." It is said that Abū al-Yusr said this, and it is said ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, and perhaps they all said it. The Prophet ﷺ said: "I do not kill by gesture." A certain person said: The Prophet ﷺ said on that day: "A prophet does not have treacherous eyes." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ accepted his allegiance upon Islam. After that, whenever ʿAbd Allāh saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he would flee from him. ʿUthmān said: "O Messenger of Allah, we see him fleeing from you whenever he sees you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said: "Did I not accept his allegiance and grant him safety?" He said: "Yes, but he remembers the greatness of his crime." The Prophet ﷺ said: "Islam effaces what came before it." So ʿUthmān returned to ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd and informed him. After that, he would come and greet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the people. ʿAbd Allāh witnessed the conquest of Egypt, settled there, and ʿUthmān appointed him governor over it. He raided Ifrīqiyyah, the land of Nubia, and Dhāt al-Ṣawārī in the land of the Byzantines at sea. Then he came as a delegate to ʿUthmān. When he returned, Ibn Abī Ḥudhayfah prevented him from entering al-Fusṭāṭ, so he went to ʿAsqalān and stayed there. He did not give allegiance to ʿAlī or to Muʿāwiyah. He died there in this year. ʿAmmār b. Yāsir ʿAmmār b. Yāsir b. Mālik b. Kinānah b. Qays, his kunyah was Abū al-Yaqẓān: He embraced Islam in Makkah early, in the house of al-Arqam, after thirty-some men, and he is counted among the foremost of the emigrants. He was tortured for the sake of Allah in Makkah. He, his father, and his mother Sumayyah, the freedwoman of Abū Ḥudhayfah b. al-Mughīrah, embraced Islam. Quraysh used to torture them on the burning ground to make them renounce their religion. The Prophet ﷺ passed by them while they were being tortured and said: "Be patient, O family of Yāsir, for your appointment is Paradise." ʿAmmār was tortured until he did not know what he was saying. He was the first to build a mosque in his house to pray in. He witnessed Badr and all the battles with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He was tall, dark-skinned, restless, with reddish-brown eyes, broad-shouldered, and he did not dye his white hair. On the authority of ʿAlī ؓ who said: ʿAmmār sought permission to enter upon the Prophet ﷺ, and he recognized his voice, so he said: "Welcome to the good one, son of the good one." On the authority of Anas b. Mālik, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed Paradise longs for three individuals: ʿAlī, ʿAmmār, and Salmān." On the authority of ʿAmmār b. Yāsir, that he said while he was traveling to Ṣiffīn on the bank of the Euphrates: O Allah, if I knew that it were more pleasing to You for me that I throw myself from this mountain and fall down, I would do it; and if I knew that it were more pleasing to You for me that I kindle a great fire and fall into it, I would do it. O Allah, if I knew that it were more pleasing to You for me that I cast myself into the water and drown myself, I would do it. For I do not fight except desiring Your countenance, and I hope that You will not disappoint me while I desire Your countenance. On the authority of Abū Sinān al-Duʾalī, the Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said: I saw ʿAmmār b. Yāsir call for a drink, and a bowl of milk was brought to him, and he drank from it, then said: Allah and His Messenger have spoken the truth. Today I shall meet the beloved ones, Muḥammad and his party. Indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The last thing you will be provisioned with from this world is a bowl of milk." Muḥammad b. Saʿd narrated to us, saying: ʿAmmār b. Yāsir was from ʿAbs of Yemen, an ally of the Banū Makhzūm. He was given the kunyah Abū al-Yaqẓān. He was killed at Ṣiffīn with the Commander of the Faithful ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, may Allah ennoble his face, in the year thirty-seven, at the age of ninety-three years, and he was buried there. On the authority of ʿĀṣim b. Ḍamrah: that ʿAlī prayed over ʿAmmār and did not wash him. Ibn al-Jawzī said: It has been said that ʿAmmār was killed when he was ninety-one years old. And it is said: ninety-four. Abū ʿĀdiyah al-Muzanī killed him; he thrust him with a spear and he fell. When he fell, another man bent over him and severed his head. They both came disputing over him, each saying: I killed him. ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ said: By Allah, they are disputing only about the Fire. Muʿāwiyah heard this from him, and when the two men departed, Muʿāwiyah said to ʿAmr: I have not seen the like of what you have done with people who sacrificed themselves for us; you told them: You are disputing about the Fire. ʿAmr said: By Allah, it is that. By Allah, you know it. I wish I had died twenty years before this. The slain of Ṣiffīn. And in this year, during the days of Ṣiffīn, a great multitude and an enormous number were killed. It is said: Forty-five thousand of the people of Syria were killed, and twenty-five thousand of the people of Iraq. And it is said: Forty thousand of the people of Iraq were killed out of one hundred twenty thousand, and twenty thousand of the people of Syria were killed out of sixty thousand. In sum, among the slain of both parties were notable and famous men whose enumeration would be lengthy. In what we have mentioned there is sufficiency. And Allah, exalted is He, knows best. And Uways al-Qaranī was killed at Ṣiffīn. And it is said: rather he died in Damascus, and it is said: in Armenia, and it is said: in Sijistān. And in it Jundub b. Zuhayr al-Azdī was killed—and he was one of the Companions—with ʿAlī. And also at Ṣiffīn Ḥābis b. Saʿd al-Ṭāʾī was killed with Muʿāwiyah—and he was the maternal uncle of Yazīd b. ʿAdī b. Ḥātim—and Yazīd killed his killer treacherously. ʿAdī wanted to hand him over to the heirs of the slain man, but he fled to Muʿāwiyah. Among those who witnessed Ṣiffīn with ʿAlī was Khuzaymah b. Thābit, the possessor of two testimonies, and he did not fight. When ʿAmmār b. Yāsir was killed, he drew his sword and fought until he was killed, saying: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "ʿAmmār will be killed by the transgressing party." And with ʿAlī was killed Suhayl b. ʿAmr (b. Abī ʿUmar) al-Anṣārī—and he was a Badrī. Among those who witnessed and were killed in it with ʿAlī from the Muhājirūn: Khālid b. al-Walīd, and he had companionship. (Shurayḥ b.
