Translation
✧ Ibn Jarīr said: The people performed the pilgrimage in this year—I mean the year thirty-seven—under ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbbās, ʿAlī's deputy over Yemen and its districts. The deputy over Makkah was Qutham b. al-ʿAbbās, and over Madinah was Tammām b. ʿAbbās. It was also said: Sahl b. Ḥunayf. Over Basra was ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās, and over its judiciary was Abū al-Aswad al-Duʾalī. Over Egypt was Muḥammad b. Abī Bakr al-Ṣiddīq. The Commander of the Faithful ʿAlī was residing in Kufa, while Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān was in Syria, having taken control of it. I say: It was his intention to seize the land of Egypt from Muḥammad b. Abī Bakr al-Ṣiddīq. ʿAlī sent Jaʿdah al-Makhzūmī to Khurasan In this year, after his return from Ṣiffīn, ʿAlī ؓ sent Jaʿdah b. Hubayrah al-Makhzūmī to Khurasan. He reached a people who had disbelieved and refused, so he returned. He sent in his place Khulayd b. Qurrah al-Yarbūʿī, who besieged the people of Naysābūr until they made peace with him, and the people of Marw made peace with him. He obtained two slave girls from the sons of kings, and they came under a pledge of safety, so he sent them to ʿAlī ؓ, and he gave them to one of the village headmen.
