Translation

✧ Section On some of his concise, brief, and wondrous sayings ʿAlī ؓ said: “Prudence is suspicion.” Related by Abū al-Shaykh and Ibn Ḥayyān. He also said: “The near one is he whom affection brings near, even if his lineage is distant; and the far one is he whom enmity distances, even if his lineage is near. And nothing is nearer than a hand to a body. Indeed, when a hand becomes corrupt, it is cut off, and when it is cut off, it is cauterized.” Related by Abū Nuʿaym. He also said: “Five things take them from me: Let none of you fear anything but his own sin, and let him hope for nothing but his Lord. Let not one who does not know be ashamed to learn, and let not one who does not know, when asked about what he does not know, be ashamed to say: 'Allah knows best.' Indeed, patience is to faith as the head is to the body: when patience departs, faith departs, and when the head departs, the body departs.” Related by Saʿīd b. Manṣūr in his Sunan. He also said: “The true jurist is one who does not cause people to despair of Allah's mercy, does not permit them to disobey Allah, does not make them feel secure from Allah's punishment, and does not abandon the Qurʾān out of aversion to it in favor of something else. Indeed, there is no good in worship without knowledge, no knowledge without understanding, and no recitation without reflection.” Related by Ibn al-Ḍurays in 'The Virtues of the Qurʾān'. He also said: “And the coolest of it upon the liver is that, when I am asked about what I do not know, I say: 'Allah knows best.'” Related by Ibn ʿAsākir. He also said: “Whoever desires to be just to people from himself, let him love for them what he loves for himself.” Related by Ibn ʿAsākir. He also said: “Seven things are from Satan: severe anger, severe sneezing, severe yawning, vomiting, nosebleed, whispering, and sleeping during remembrance.” He also said: “Eat pomegranate with its pulp, for it is a tanner of the stomach.” Related by ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad in the additions to the Musnad. He also said: “Your reciting to a scholar and the scholar's reciting to you are equal.” Related by al-Ḥākim in 'The History'. He also said: “A time will come upon people when the believer will be more abased than a slave-girl.” Related by Saʿīd b. Manṣūr.
