The caliphate of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib
[نَقْشُ خَاتَمِهِ ؓ وَأَخْرَجَ ابْنُ عَسَاكِرَ مِنْ طَرِيقِ جَعْفَرَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ: (أَنَّ خَاتَمَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ كَانَ مِنْ وَرِقٍ، نَقْشُهُ: نِعْمَ الْقَادِرُ اللَّهُ). وَأُخْرِجَ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ قَالَ: (كَانَ نَقْشُ خَاتَمِ عَلِيٍّ: الْمُلْكُ لِلَّهِ). وَأُخْرِجَ عَنِ الْمَدَائِنِيِّ قَالَ: (لَمَّا دَخَلَ عَلِيٌّ الْكُوفَةَ... دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ رَجُلٌ مِنْ حُكَمَاءِ الْعَرَبِ، فَقَالَ: وَاللَّهِ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ؛ لَقَدْ زِنْتَ الْخِلَافَةَ وَمَا زَانَتْكَ، وَرَفَعْتَهَا وَمَا رَفَعَتْكَ، وَهِيَ كَانَتْ أَحْوَجَ إِلَيْكَ مِنْكَ إِلَيْهَا). وَأُخْرِجَ عَنْ مَجْمَعٍ: (أَنَّ عَلِيًّا كَانَ يَكْنُسُ بَيْتَ الْمَالِ، ثُمَّ يُصَلِّي فِيهِ؛ رَجَاءَ أَنْ يَشْهَدَ لَهُ أَنَّهُ لَمْ يَحْبِسْ فِيهِ الْمَالَ عَنِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ).
Translation
✧ [The inscription of his seal, ؓ Ibn ʿAsākir related from the route of Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad, from his father: (The seal of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib was of silver, its inscription: "Excellent is the All-Powerful, Allah"). It was related from ʿAmr b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān who said: (The inscription of the seal of ʿAlī was: "Sovereignty belongs to Allah"). It was related from al-Madāʾinī who said: (When ʿAlī entered al-Kūfah... a man from among the sages of the Arabs entered upon him and said: By Allah, O Commander of the Faithful, you have adorned the caliphate and it did not adorn you, and you have elevated it and it did not elevate you, and it was more in need of you than you were of it). It was related from Majmaʿ: (ʿAlī used to sweep the treasury, then pray in it; hoping that it would testify for him that he did not withhold its wealth from the Muslims).]
