Mālik b. ʿĀmir, Abū ʿAbd Allāh: He was an ally of al-Khaṭṭāb b. Nufayl, and al-Khaṭṭāb adopted him. When the words of the Almighty were revealed: "Call them by their fathers' names" (Q 33:5), ʿĀmir returned to his lineage. He became a Muslim before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the house of al-Arqam, and he migrated to Abyssinia in both migrations, accompanied by his wife Laylā bt. Abī Ḥathmah al-ʿAdawiyyah. He migrated to Madinah, and no one had arrived there before him except Abū Salamah, and his wife was the first woman to arrive in Madinah. He was present at Badr, Uḥud, and all the battles with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. From Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, who said: ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĀmir b. Rabīʿah informed me, saying: ʿĀmir b. Rabīʿah stood to pray at night, and that was when the people began to criticize ʿUthmān. He prayed at night, then slept. He was visited in a dream and it was said to him: "Rise and ask Allah to protect you from the trial from which He protected His righteous servants." He rose and prayed, then fell ill, and nothing was brought out except his bier. Ibn Saʿd said: Muḥammad b. ʿUmar said: The death of ʿĀmir b. Rabīʿah was a few days after the killing of ʿUthmān. When a child was born to him, his wife sought the intercession of his maternal uncles, so they spoke to him and said: "You have dependents now, so perhaps you should gather something for your child." He said: "My soul refuses anything but that I shield myself with everything I find from the Fire." When he died, he left a piece of land next to the land of a man. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: He had on a yellow wrap worth no more than three dirhams, and I would not be covered by the earth with this wrap of mine. The guardian of the children refused, and the neighbor of the land needed it, so he sold it for three hundred thousand.
