✧ Mention of Those Who Died in This Year Al-Ḥārith b. Nawfal b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim Al-Ḥārith b. Nawfal b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim: He became Muslim when his father became Muslim, and he accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and narrated from him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed him as a governor, and Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, and ʿUthmān ؓ appointed him over Makkah, and he moved to al-Baṣrah and settled there and died there. Al-Miqdād b. al-Aswad Al-Miqdād b. al-Aswad, and his father's name was ʿAmr b. Thaʿlabah b. Mālik, Abū Maʿbad: He was an ally of al-Aswad b. ʿAbd Yaghūth al-Zuhrī in the Jāhiliyyah, and he adopted him, and he was called al-Miqdād b. al-Aswad until the revelation of His saying, exalted be He: "Call them by their fathers" [so he was called: al-Miqdād b. ʿAmr]. He was tall, dark-skinned, large-bellied, with much hair on his head, [he dyed his beard yellow, with joined eyebrows and a hooked nose]. Al-Miqdād emigrated to Abyssinia in the second emigration according to the statement of Ibn Isḥāq and al-Wāqidī, but Mūsā b. ʿUqbah and Abū Maʿshar did not mention him, and he witnessed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the Battle of Badr and all the expeditions. From al-Qāsim b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, who said: The first whose horse charged with him in the cause of Allah, mighty and majestic be He, was al-Miqdād b. al-Aswad. Muḥammad b. Saʿd said: From ʿAbd Allāh, who said: I witnessed from al-Miqdād a scene such that being its companion is dearer to me than anything with which it could be compared. He came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was supplicating against the polytheists, and said: O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, we do not say to you as the people of Moses said: "Go you and your Lord and fight; we are sitting here." But we fight on your right, on your left, before you, and behind you. And I saw the Prophet's ﷺ face brighten at that and it pleased him. Al-Miqdād drank castor oil and died at al-Jurf, three miles from Madinah, and he was carried on the shoulders of men until he was buried in al-Baqīʿ in Madinah, and ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān ؓ prayed over him, and he was seventy years old or about that.
