✧ Mention of the banishment of those who were banished from the people of Al-Baṣrah to the Levant When three years of the governorship of ʿAbdullāh b. ʿĀmir had passed, it reached him that [among ʿAbd al-Qays] there was a man staying with Ḥakīm b. Jabalah al-ʿAbdī, and that ʿAbdullāh b. Sabaʾ, known as Ibn al-Sawdāʾ, was the man staying with him. A group gathered around him, and he cast Ibn al-Sawdāʾ at them without declaring it openly, and they accepted it from him. Ibn ʿĀmir sent for him and asked him: “Who are you?” He said: “A man from the People of the Book; I desired Islam and your protection.” He said: “That does not reach me; depart from me.” So he departed until he came to Al-Kūfah, and he was expelled from it. He headed to Miṣr and settled there, and he began corresponding with them and they with him, and men traveled between them. Ḥumrān b. Abān had married a woman during her waiting period, so ʿUthmān separated them, flogged him, and banished him to Al-Baṣrah. He kept close to Ibn ʿĀmir. One day they mentioned passing by ʿĀmir b. ʿAbd al-Qays, so Ḥumrān said: “Shall I go ahead of you and inform him?” He went out and entered upon him while he was reading from the muṣḥaf and said: “The governor intends to pass by you, so I wished to inform you.” He did not interrupt his recitation, so he got up from him. When he reached the door, Ibn ʿĀmir met him and said: “I have come to you from a man who sees no merit for the family of Ibrāhīm over him.” Ibn ʿĀmir entered upon him, and he closed the muṣḥaf and spoke with him. Ibn ʿĀmir said to him: “Will you not visit us?” He said: “Saʿd b. Abī al-Qarḥāʾ loves honor.” He said: “Shall we not appoint you?” He said: “Ḥuṣayn b. al-Ḥurr loves office.” He said: “Shall we not marry you off?” He said: “Rabīʿah b. ʿAsal is pleased by women.” He said: “This one claims that you see no merit for the family of Ibrāhīm over you!” So he leafed through the muṣḥaf, and the first thing his eye fell upon was: “Indeed, Allah chose Adam and Nūḥ and the family of Ibrāhīm and the family of ʿImrān over the worlds.” So Ḥumrān slandered him, and Ḥumrān remained in Al-Baṣrah as long as Allah willed. ʿUthmān gave him permission, and he came to Al-Madīnah with a group of people, and they slandered ʿĀmir b. ʿAbd al-Qays, saying that he did not approve of marriage, did not eat meat, and did not attend the Friday prayer. So he sent him to Muʿāwiyah. When he came to him, he saw tharīd with him, and he ate in an Arab manner, so he knew that the man had been lied about. Muʿāwiyah informed him of the reason for his expulsion, and he said: “As for the Friday prayer, I attend it in the back of the gathering, then I return among the first of the people. As for marriage, I left while a proposal was being made on my behalf. As for meat, you have seen, but I do not eat the slaughtered animals of butchers since I saw a butcher dragging a sheep to its slaughtering place, then he put the knife to its throat and kept saying: ‘Hypocrisy, hypocrisy,’ until he slaughtered it.” He said: “Then return.” He said: “I will not return to a town whose people deemed lawful against me what they did.” So he was in the coastal regions, and he would meet Muʿāwiyah, and Muʿāwiyah would often say: “What is your need?” He would say: “I have no need.” When he pressed him much, he said: “Restore to me some of the heat of Al-Baṣrah, so that fasting may be hard for me, for it is easy for me in your lands.”
