Translation

✧ Mention of the sortie of Qārin Then Qārin gathered a large host from the direction of al-Ṭabasayn, the people of Bādhaghīs, Herāt, and Qūhistān, and advanced with forty thousand. Qays said to Ibn Khāzim: "What do you think?" He said: "I think you should leave the lands, for I am their governor and have a covenant from Ibn ʿĀmir that if there is war in Khurāsān, I am its governor," and he brought out a document he had deliberately forged. Qays disliked disputing with him, left him and the lands, and went to Ibn ʿĀmir, who reproached him, saying: "You have left the lands ruined and come away!" He said: "He came to me with a covenant from you." He said: Then Ibn Khāzim marched against Qārin with four thousand, and ordered the men to carry fat. When he drew near Qārin, he ordered each man to wrap a rag or cotton on the head of his spear, then to grease it heavily, then he marched until evening. He sent forward his vanguard of six hundred and followed them, and ordered the men to light fires on the tips of the spears. His vanguard reached Qārin's camp at midnight and skirmished with them. The people were thrown into confusion, for they felt secure from a night attack. Ibn Khāzim drew near them, and they saw the fires to right and left advancing and receding, lowering and rising, and that terrified them. Ibn Khāzim's vanguard fought them, then Ibn Khāzim fell upon them with the Muslims and killed Qārin. The polytheists fled, and they pursued them killing as they wished, and took much booty. Ibn Khāzim wrote to Ibn ʿĀmir of the victory, and he was pleased and confirmed him over Khurāsān. He remained there until the affair of the Camel ended, then came to al-Baṣrah and witnessed the battle of Ibn al-Ḥaḍramī, and he was with him in the house of Sunbīl. It is said: When Qārin gathered, Qays b. al-Haytham consulted ʿAbd Allāh b. Khāzim about what to do. He said: "I think you cannot withstand the multitude of those who have come against us. Go yourself to Ibn ʿĀmir and inform him of the enemy's numbers, while we remain in the fortresses and prolong matters until your reinforcements come to us." Qays departed. When he had gone far, Ibn Khāzim produced a covenant and said: "Ibn ʿĀmir has appointed me over Khurāsān." He marched against Qārin and defeated him, and wrote of the victory to Ibn ʿĀmir, who confirmed him over Khurāsān. The people of al-Baṣrah did not cease raiding those of the people of Khurāsān who had not made peace, and whenever they returned they left four thousand as a reinforcement.
