Translation

✧ Ibn ʿĀmir conquered Marw al-Rūdh, al-Ṭāliqān, al-Fāriyāb, al-Jūzjān, and Ṭukhāristān In it (the year thirty-two), Ibn ʿĀmir conquered Marw al-Rūdh, al-Ṭāliqān, al-Fāriyāb, al-Jūzjān, and Ṭukhāristān. As for Marw al-Rūdh, Ibn ʿĀmir sent al-Aḥnaf b. Qays to it, and he besieged it. They came out against him, and he fought them until he defeated them and forced them into their fortress. Then they made peace with him for a substantial sum of money, on condition that he impose the land tax on the lands of the common people, and leave the land that Kisrā had granted to the father of the marzubān, the lord of Marw, when he killed the serpent that used to cut off the road against the people and eat them. So al-Aḥnaf made peace with them on that basis, and wrote for them a document of peace to that effect. Then al-Aḥnaf sent al-Aqraʿ b. Ḥābis to al-Jūzjān, and he conquered it after fighting that took place between them, in which a host of the brave men of the Muslims were killed. Then they were granted victory. About that, Kuthayyir al-Nahshalī recited a long ode, in which he said: May the rain of the clouds, when they pour down, water the battlefields of the young men at al-Jūzjān, to al-Qaṣrayn from the district of Khūṭ. There the two Aqraʿs destroyed them. Then al-Aḥnaf marched from Marw al-Rūdh to Balkh, and he besieged them until they made peace with him for four hundred thousand. He appointed his cousin Usayd b. al-Mutashammis to collect the money. Then he departed seeking jihād, and winter overtook him. He said to his companions: "What do you wish?" They said: "ʿAmr b. Maʿdīkarib said: If you cannot do something, then leave it, and pass on to what you can do. So al-Aḥnaf ordered the departure to Balkh, and he stayed there for the duration of the winter.
