Translation
✧ Mention of the conquest of Sijistān, Kābul, and other places The conquest of Sijistān had already occurred in the days of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, then its people broke the treaty after him. When Ibn ʿĀmir turned toward Khurāsān, he dispatched from Kirmān al-Rabīʿ b. Ziyād al-Ḥārithī to it. He crossed the desert until he came to the fort of Zāliq, and raided its people on the day of Mehrajān. He seized the dihqān, who ransomed himself by planting a spear and burying it in gold and silver, and made peace with him on the terms of the peace of Fāris. Then he came to a town called Karkūyah, and its people made peace with him. He marched to Zaranj and encamped at the city of Rūsht near Zaranj. Its people fought him and some men of the Muslims were wounded. Then the polytheists were routed and a great slaughter befell them. Al-Rabīʿ came to Nāshirūdh and conquered it, then came to Sharwādh and gained dominance over it, and marched from there to Zaranj. He besieged it and its people fought him, so he defeated them and blockaded them. Its marzbān sent to him to make peace and sought a guarantee of safety for himself so that he might come into his presence, so he granted him safety. Al-Rabīʿ sat for him on a corpse from among the bodies of the slain and leaned on another, and he ordered his companions to do likewise. When the marzbān saw them, that terrified him, so he made peace with him for a thousand servant boys, each boy with a cup of gold, and the Muslims entered the city. Then he marched from there to Sanārūdh, which is a valley, crossed it, and came to the village where the stable of the horse of Rustam al-Shadīd was. Its people fought him, and he prevailed over them. Then he returned to Zaranj and stayed there about a year, then returned to Ibn ʿĀmir, leaving a governor in his place over it. Its people expelled the governor and refused to submit. Al-Rabīʿ's governorship lasted a year and a half, and he took captive forty thousand heads during it. His scribe was al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī. Ibn ʿĀmir appointed ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Samurah b. Ḥabīb b. ʿAbd Shams over Sijistān. He marched to it and besieged Zaranj. Its marzbān made peace with him for two million dirhams and two thousand servant boys. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān gained dominance over what lies between Zaranj and al-Kashsh on the side of India, and he gained dominance on the side of al-Rukhkhaj over what lies between it and al-Dāwar. When he reached the land of al-Dāwar, he besieged them in the mountain of al-Zūr. Then he made peace with them and entered upon al-Zūr, which is an idol of gold, its eyes two rubies. He cut off its hand and took the two rubies, then said to the marzbān: "The gold and jewels are yours; I only wanted to show you that it can neither harm nor benefit." He conquered Kābul and Zābulistān, which is the province of Ghaznah. Then he returned to Zaranj and stayed there until the affair of ʿUthmān became disordered. He left Umayr b. Aḥmar al-Yashkurī as his deputy over it and departed. Its people expelled Umayr b. Aḥmar and refused to submit. About Umayr, Ziyād b. al-Aʿjam said: Were it not for Umayr, Yashkur would have perished, and Yashkur are dead in every case.
