The Caliphate of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān

✧ Al-Wāqidī said: Maʿmar narrated to me from al-Zuhrī, who said: In this expedition were Muḥammad b. Abī Ḥudhayfah and Muḥammad b. Abī Bakr. They openly proclaimed the faults of ʿUthmān, and what he had changed and how he had contravened Abū Bakr and ʿUmar. They said: 'His blood is lawful, because he appointed ʿAbdallāh b. Saʿd — who had apostatized and disbelieved in the Glorious Qurʾān, and whose blood the Messenger of God ﷺ had made lawful — and the Messenger of God ﷺ had expelled certain people, yet ʿUthmān appointed them. He removed the Companions and appointed Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ and ʿAbdallāh b. ʿĀmir.' News of this reached ʿAbdallāh b. Saʿd, who said: 'Do not ride with us.' So the two rode in a vessel in which there was no one from the Muslims. They met the enemy, and they were the most cowardly of the Muslims in fighting. They were asked about that, and they said: 'How can we fight alongside a man whom it is not proper for us to accept as a judge?' ʿAbdallāh b. Saʿd sent for them and forbade them in the sternest terms, saying: 'By God, were it not that I do not know what would please the Commander of the Faithful, I would punish you and imprison you.'
