Translation

✧ Then the year thirty-one began. In it occurred the expedition of Dhāt al-Ṣawārī and the expedition of the Asāwida on the sea, according to what al-Wāqidī mentioned. Abū Maʿshar said: The expedition of Dhāt al-Ṣawārī was in the year thirty-four. The summary of that, according to what al-Wāqidī, Sayf, and others mentioned, is that Syria had its governorship consolidated for Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān two years into the caliphate of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān ؓ, and he guarded it with the utmost protection and defended its territory. Despite this, he had an expedition every year into the lands of the Byzantines in the summer season—for this reason they call this expedition the Ṣāʾifah—so they killed many, took others captive, conquered fortresses, seized wealth, and terrified the enemies. When ʿAbdullāh b. Saʿd b. Abī Sarḥ had struck what he struck of the Franks and Berbers in the lands of Ifrīqiyah and al-Andalus, the Byzantines became enraged and gathered around Constans son of Heraclius, and they marched against the Muslims in a gathering the like of which had not been seen since Islam began. They came out in five hundred ships and headed for ʿAbdullāh b. Saʿd b. Abī Sarḥ and his Muslim companions who were in the lands of the Maghrib. When the two armies came in sight of each other, the Byzantines spent the night ringing bells and making the sign of the cross, while the Muslims spent the night reciting and praying. When morning came, ʿAbdullāh b. Saʿd drew up his companions in rows in the ships and ordered them to remember God and recite the Qurʾān. One of those who was present said: They advanced upon us in a manner the like of which had not been seen for the great number of ships and the multitude of their masts. The wind was for them and against us, so we anchored. Then the wind calmed for us, and we said to them: If you wish, we and you will go out to the shore, and the more eager of us and you will die. He said: They snorted with a single snort and said: The water, the water. He said: We drew near to them and tied our ships to their ships. Then we and they clashed with swords, men leaping upon men with swords and daggers. The waves struck the eyes of those ships until they forced them to the shore, and the waves cast the bodies of men onto the shore until they became like a great mountain. Blood overcame the color of the water, and the Muslims showed patience that day such as had never been known before. Many of them were killed, and of the Byzantines many times that number. Then God sent down His help upon the Muslims, and Constans and his army fled—having become very few—and he had many severe wounds that he spent a long time treating afterward. ʿAbdullāh b. Saʿd remained at Dhāt al-Ṣawārī for some days, then he returned supported, victorious, and triumphant.
