Translation

✧ The Year Thirty of the Prophetic Emigration In it, Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ conquered Ṭabaristān, according to the statement of al-Wāqidī, Abū Maʿshar, and al-Madāʾinī. He said: He was the first to raid it. Sayf claimed that they had previously made peace with Suwayd b. Muqarrin on condition that he would not raid it, in return for wealth given to him by its isbahbadh. But Allah knows best. Al-Madāʾinī mentioned that Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ rode out with an army that included al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn, the four ʿAbd Allāhs, and Ḥudhayfah b. al-Yamān, along with a host of Companions. He marched with them, passing through various lands, whose people made peace with him for substantial sums of money, until he reached a town in the jurisdiction of Jurjān called Ṭamīsah, on the seacoast. They fought him until they were forced to perform the prayer of fear. He asked Ḥudhayfah: How did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray? He informed him, and he prayed as he had informed him. Then the people of that fortress asked him for safe-conduct, and he granted it to them on condition that he would not kill a single man among them. They opened the fortress, and he killed them all except for one man, and seized what was in the fortress. A man from Banū Nahd found a locked basket, and Saʿīd summoned him about it. They opened it, and inside was a rolled-up black cloth. They spread it out, and inside it was a red cloth. They spread that out, and inside it was a yellow cloth, containing two penises, one bay-colored and one rose-colored. A poet lampooned Banū Nahd with them: The noble ones returned with captives as booty, While Banū Nahd won two penises in a basket— A bay and a rose, both ample; They thought them spoils, and what a mistake that was. They said: Then the people of Jurjān broke the agreement that Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ had made with them, and refused to pay the sum he had imposed on them—which was one hundred thousand dinars. It is also said: two hundred thousand dinars. And it is said: three hundred thousand dinars. Later, Yazīd b. al-Muhallab restored it to them, as we shall mention, if Allah Almighty wills.
