The Caliphate of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān

Translation

✧ Then the Year Twenty-Eight Began ʿUmar ؓ was wary of raiding by sea It was said: In the year twenty-eight, Umm Ḥarām bt. Milḥān al-Anṣāriyyah was thrown by her mule on the island of Cyprus, and her neck broke and she died, in confirmation of the Prophet ﷺ, when he informed her that she would be among the first to raid by sea. ʿAbd Allāh b. Qays al-Jāsī and the harbor ʿAbd Allāh b. Qays al-Jāsī remained in charge of the sea. He raided fifty raids, both winter and summer, on land and sea, without anyone drowning or suffering harm. He used to pray to God to keep him and his army safe, and He answered him. When God willed to afflict him in his body, he went out in a small boat as a scout and reached a harbor in the land of the Byzantines, where there were poor people begging. He gave them charity. One of their women returned to her village and said to the men, "This is ʿAbd Allāh b. Qays in the harbor." They rose against him and attacked him. He fought them, and he alone was struck down, while the sailor escaped and came to his companions and informed them. They came and anchored at the harbor, with Sufyān b. ʿAwf al-Azdī as their commander. He went out to fight them and grew weary, and he began to curse his companions. A slave girl of ʿAbd Allāh said, "This is not what he used to say when fighting!" Sufyān said, "What did he used to say?" She said: "The overwhelming pangs, then they clear away from us" He adhered to her words, and Muslims were struck down that day. Later that woman was asked, "By what did you recognize him?" She said, "He was like a merchant, but when I asked him, he gave me like a king, and by this I recognized him."
