The Caliphate of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān

Translation

✧ In this year ʿUthmān married Nāʾilah bt. al-Farāfiṣah. She had been a Christian and embraced Islam before he consummated the marriage. Ibn al-Kalbī said: Every name in the Maghrib is Farāfiṣah with a ḍammah on the fāʾ, except Nāʾilah bt. al-Farāfiṣah, for it is with a fatḥah on the fāʾ. From Abū ʿUbaydah, who said: When ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān married Nāʾilah bt. al-Farāfiṣah, he sought her hand, and her father sent her to him with her brother Ḍabb. When she departed from al-Samāwah toward al-Madīnah, she set out from parting with her family and her land and said: Is it true, do you see today, O Ḍabb, that I am a companion riding toward al-Madīnah? Was there not among the youths of Ḥiṣn b. Ḍamḍam—woe to you—what suffices the veiled tent? [God has decreed truly that you die a stranger in Yathrib, meeting neither mother nor father.] From a mawlā of Ṭalḥah: ʿUthmān ؓ appointed al-Walīd b. ʿUqbah over the ṣadaqāt of Kulayb, and he married him to Nāʾilah bt. al-Farāfiṣah al-Kalbiyyah. When he arrived, he said: I have married you to Nāʾilah bt. al-Farāfiṣah. He said: You have married me to a Christian woman? He said: When she comes to you she will embrace Islam. When she arrived, ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān entered upon her, prayed two rakʿahs, then said: O woman, will you come to us or shall we come to you? She said: Rather we come to you, by the blessing of the eye, for I have undertaken the journey to you from the farthest distance between me and you of the house. She rose until she sat next to ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān. ʿUthmān said to her: Perhaps you see gray hair and change in age, yet behind that is a freshness of youth. She said: The most beloved of companions to me is one from whom the impetuosity of youth has gone, whose forbearance has gathered, and whose judgment is trusted. When he went out, the people said to him: O Commander of the Faithful, how did you find your wife? He said: I found greater soundness of mind than the one who entered upon me. In another narration: Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ was over al-Kūfah, and he married Hind bt. al-Farāfiṣah. This reached ʿUthmān, and he wrote to him: It has reached me that you have married a woman, so write to me of her lineage and her beauty. He wrote to him: If she has a sister, marry her to me. So Saʿīd sent to al-Farāfiṣah seeking one of his daughters for ʿUthmān. Al-Farāfiṣah commanded his son Ḍabb, and he married her to him. Ḍabb was a Muslim, and al-Farāfiṣah was a Christian. When they wanted to transport her, her father said to her: You are coming upon women of Quraysh, women more able than you with perfume, so preserve from me two qualities: apply kohl and perfume yourself with water so that your scent is the scent of a waterskin that rain has struck. When she was adorned, she was distressed at her distress and grieved at parting with her family, and she recited: Do you not see, by God, O Ḍabb, that I am a companion riding toward al-Madīnah? There were among the sons of Ḥiṣn b. Ḍamḍam—woe to you—what suffices the pegged tent. When she arrived to ʿUthmān, he placed his turban and the baldness appeared. He said: Let not what you see of my baldness alarm you, for behind it is what you would love. She was silent. He said: Either you rise to me or I rise to you. She said: As for what you mentioned of baldness, I am of women whose husbands most beloved to them are the bald chiefs. As for your saying: Whether you rise or I rise, by God, what I have undertaken from the distances of al-Samāwah is farther than what lies between me and you; rather I rise to you. She rose and sat beside him. He wiped her head and prayed for blessing for her, then said: Cast off your cloak. She cast it off. Then he said: Loosen your waist-wrapper. She said: That is up to you. He loosened her waist-wrapper, and she was among the most favored of his wives with him. From Yaḥyā b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Thawbān, who said: Nāʾilah bt. al-Farāfiṣah, the wife of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān ؓ, looked in the mirror, and her teeth pleased her. She took a stone and broke her incisors, and said: By God, no one shall be entitled to you after ʿUthmān. In this year: Ḥabīb b. Salamah raided Syria, from the land of the Byzantines. In it ʿUthmān built al-Zawrāʾ. ʿUthmān led the people in the pilgrimage this year.
