The Caliphate of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān
[ ثُمَّ دَخَلَتْ سَنَةُ سَبْعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ ] وِلَايَةِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَرْحٍ مِصْرَ وَفَتْحِ إِفْرِيقِيَّةَ فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ عُزِلَ عَمْرُو بْنُ الْعَاصِ عَنْ خَرَاجِ مِصْرَ ، وَاسْتُعْمِلَ عَلَيْهِ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَرْحٍ، وَكَانَ أَخَا عُثْمَانَ مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ، فَتَبَاغَيَا، فَكَتَبَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ عَمْرًا كَسَرَ عَلَى الْخَرَاجِ. وَكَتَبَ عَمْرٌو يَقُولُ: إِنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ قَدْ كَسَرَ عَلَى مَكِيدَةِ الْحَرْبِ. فَعَزَلَ عُثْمَانُ عَمْرًا وَاسْتَقْدَمَهُ، وَاسْتَعْمَلَ بَدَلَهُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ عَلَى حَرْبِ مِصْرَ وَخَرَاجِهَا، فَقَدِمَ عَمْرٌو مُغْضَبًا، فَدَخَلَ عَلَى عُثْمَانَ وَعَلَيْهِ جُبَّةٌ مَحْشُوَّةٌ [ قُطْنًا ]، فَقَالَ لَهُ: مَا حَشْوُ جُبَّتِكَ ؟ قَالَ: عَمْرٌو. قَالَ: قَدْ عَلِمْتَ [ أَنَّ حَشْوَهَا عَمْرٌو ] وَلَمْ أُرِدْ هَذَا، [ إِنَّمَا سَأَلْتُ أَقُطْنٌ هُوَ أَمْ غَيْرُهُ ؟ ].
Translation
✧ Then the Year Twenty-Seven Began The governorship of ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd b. Abī Sarḥ over Egypt and the conquest of Ifrīqiyyah In this year, ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ was dismissed from the land tax of Egypt, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd b. Abī Sarḥ was appointed over it. He was ʿUthmān's foster brother. They became hostile to each other, so ʿAbd Allāh wrote to ʿUthmān saying: 'ʿAmr has broken [the collection of] the land tax.' And ʿAmr wrote saying: 'ʿAbd Allāh has broken [the plan of] the war stratagem.' So ʿUthmān dismissed ʿAmr and recalled him, and appointed ʿAbd Allāh in his place over the war and the land tax of Egypt. ʿAmr arrived angry, and entered upon ʿUthmān wearing a jubbah stuffed [with cotton]. He said to him: 'What is the stuffing of your jubbah?' He said: 'ʿAmr.' He said: 'I knew [that its stuffing was ʿAmr], but I did not mean this. [I only asked whether it is cotton or something else?]'
