The Caliphate of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān
غَزْوَةُ إِفْرِيقِيَّةَ أَمَرَ عُثْمَانُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَرْحٍ أَنْ يَغْزُوَ بِلَادَ إِفْرِيقِيَّةَ، فَإِذَا فَتَحَهَا اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَهُ خُمْسُ الْخُمْسِ مِنَ الْغَنِيمَةِ نَفْلًا. فَسَارَ إِلَيْهَا فِي عَشَرَةِ آلَافٍ فَافْتَتَحَهَا؛ سَهْلَهَا وَجَبَلَهَا، وَقَتَلَ خَلْقَا كَثِيرًا مِنْ أَهْلِهَا، ثُمَّ اجْتَمَعُوا عَلَى الطَّاعَةِ وَالْإِسْلَامِ، وَحَسُنَ إِسْلَامُهُمْ، وَأَخَذَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعْدٍ خُمْسَ الْخُمْسِ مِنَ الْغَنِيمَةِ، وَبَعَثَ بِأَرْبَعَةِ أَخْمَاسِهِ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ، وَقَسَمَ أَرْبَعَةَ أَخْمَاسِ الْغَنِيمَةِ بَيْنَ الْجَيْشِ فَأَصَابَ الْفَارِسُ ثَلَاثَةَ آلَافِ دِينَارٍ وَالرَّاجِلُ أَلْفَ دِينَارٍ. قَالَ الْوَاقِدِيُّ: وَصَالَحَهُ بِطْرِيقُهَا عَلَى أَلْفَيْ أَلْفِ دِينَارٍ وَخَمْسِمِائَةِ أَلْفِ دِينَارٍ وَعِشْرِينَ أَلْفِ دِينَارٍ فَأَطْلَقَهَا كُلَّهَا عُثْمَانُ فِي يَوْمٍ وَاحِدٍ لِآلِ الْحَكَمِ. وَيُقَالُ: لِآلِ مَرْوَانَ.
Translation
✧ The Campaign of Ifrīqiyyah ʿUthmān ordered ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd b. Abī Sarḥ to raid the land of Ifrīqiyyah, and if Allah granted him victory over it, he would have a fifth of the fifth of the spoils as a reward. He marched there with ten thousand and conquered it; its plain and its mountain, and he killed many of its people. Then they gathered in obedience and Islam, and their Islam became good. ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd took a fifth of the fifth of the spoils and sent four-fifths of it to ʿUthmān, and he divided four-fifths of the spoils among the army, so each horseman received three thousand dinars and each foot soldier one thousand dinars. Al-Wāqidī said: Its patrician made peace with him for two million five hundred thousand and twenty thousand dinars, and ʿUthmān released all of it in a single day to the family of al-Ḥakam. It is also said: to the family of Marwān.
