✧ Barakah, Umm Ayman, the freedwoman of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ Barakah, Umm Ayman, the freedwoman of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ [and his nursemaid]. He inherited her from his father, and she was black. He manumitted her when he married [Khadījah ؓ]. Then ʿAbd Allāh b. Zayd married her, and she bore him Ayman. After him she married Zayd b. Ḥārithah, and she bore him Usāmah b. Zayd ؓ. On the authority of Jarīr b. Ḥāzim who said: I heard ʿUthmān b. al-Qāsim relate: When Umm Ayman emigrated, she spent the evening at al-Munṣaraf, short of al-Rawḥāʾ, and she became thirsty. A bucket of water with a white rope was let down to her from the sky. She took it and drank until she was quenched. She used to say: No thirst has afflicted me after that. I exposed myself to thirst by fasting in the midday heat, but I did not become thirsty after that drink. Indeed, I would fast on a hot day and not become thirsty. And on the authority of Muḥammad b. Qays who said: Umm Ayman came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: Give me a mount. He said: "I will mount you on the offspring of a she-camel." She said: O Messenger of Allah, it cannot bear me, and I do not want it. He said: "I will not mount you except on the offspring of a she-camel." That is, he was jesting with her, and he used to jest but spoke only the truth, for all camels are the offspring of she-camels. The scholars of biography said: Umm Ayman was present at Uḥud, where she gave water and treated the wounded. She witnessed Khaybar. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, she wept and said: I weep only for the news of heaven, how it has been cut off. When ʿUmar was killed, she wept and said: Today the weakness is Islam. She died at the beginning of the caliphate of ʿUthmān, and it is said: during the caliphate of Abū Bakr. ʿUthmān b. Qays b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ b. Qays b. ʿAdī b. Sahm He died in this year. ʿUthmān b. Qays b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ b. Qays b. ʿAdī b. Sahm He is mentioned among the Companions. He witnessed the conquest of Egypt and was the first to hold the office of judge in Egypt. He was known for hospitality. Yazīd b. Abī Ḥabīb said: ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb wrote to ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ: Assign to everyone with you who pledged allegiance beneath the tree two hundred [from] the stipend, and convey that yourself with your command. Assign to Khārijah b. Ḥudhāfah in the highest rank for his bravery, and assign to ʿUthmān b. Qays in the highest rank for his hospitality. Lubābah al-Kubrā bt. al-Ḥārith b. Ḥazn 237 - Lubābah al-Kubrā bt. al-Ḥārith b. Ḥazn She was the first woman to embrace Islam after Khadījah. Al-ʿAbbās married her, and she bore him: al-Faḍl, ʿAbd Allāh, ʿUbayd Allāh, Maʿbad, Qutham, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, and Umm Ḥabīb. Concerning her, ʿAbd Allāh b. Yazīd said extemporaneously: No noble woman gave birth from a stallion To six from the womb of Umm al-Faḍl Honor her, what a matron and what a man. She emigrated to Madinah after al-ʿAbbās embraced Islam. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to visit her and take a midday nap in her house. She used to fast [on] Mondays and Thursdays, may Allah Almighty have mercy on her. Surāqah b. Mālik In it died Surāqah b. Mālik b. Juʿshum al-Mudlijī, whose kunyah was Abū Sufyān. He used to dwell at Qudayd. He is the one who followed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abū Bakr, ʿĀmir b. Fuhayrah, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Urayqiṭ al-Dīlī when they left the cave of Thawr heading for Madinah. He wanted to return them to the people of Makkah because they had set a reward of one hundred camels for each of the Prophet ﷺ and Abū Bakr, so he hoped to win that reward. But Allah did not give him power over them. Rather, when he drew near to them and heard the recitation of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the legs of his horse sank into the ground until he called out to them for protection. They granted him protection, and Abū Bakr wrote him a document of protection with the permission of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then he was brought after the expedition of al-Ṭāʾif, and he embraced Islam, and the Prophet ﷺ honored him. He is the one who said: O Messenger of Allah, is this ʿumrah of ours for this year of ours or forever? He said to him: Rather forever and ever. The ʿumrah has entered into the ḥajj until the Day of Resurrection.
