Translation
✧ Part of the elegy composed for him ʿAlī b. Muḥammad al-Madāʾinī said, with his chain of transmission from al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah, who said: When ʿUmar died, the daughter of Abī Ḥathmah wept for him and said: O ʿUmar! He straightened the crooked, healed the ailing, caused dissensions to die, and revived the Sunnahs. He departed with a clean garment, free of defect. He said: Then ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib said: By Allah, she has spoken the truth. He went with the best of it and escaped from its evil. But, by Allah, she did not say it; rather, she was made to say it. He said: And ʿĀtikah bt. Zayd b. ʿAmr b. Nufayl said about her husband ʿUmar: Fayrūz bereaved me—may his mother be bereft of him— Of a fair-skinned man who recited the Book, turning in repentance, Gentle to the near, harsh to the enemies, A trusted brother, responsive in calamities. Whenever he says something, his deed does not belie the word, Swift to good deeds, not frowning. And she also said: O eye, be generous with tears and wailing; Do not weary of weeping for the noble imam. Fate has bereaved us of the rider the day of clamor and seizing by the collar, The protection of the people, the helper against time, and the rain for the seeker and the deprived. Say to the people of ease and of hardship: Die, for fate has given him the cup of Shuʿūb to drink. And a woman of the Muslims said, weeping for him: The women of the quarter will weep for you, weeping with grief, And they will scratch faces like dinars, pure, And they will wear the garments of sorrow after the striped Yemeni garments.
