Translation
✧ [The jinn's lament for our master ʿUmar ؓ] It is related from ʿĀʾishah ؓ that she said: (When it was the last Hajj that ʿUmar performed with the Mothers of the Believers, after we had departed from ʿArafah, I passed by al-Muḥaṣṣab and heard a man on his mount saying: Where was ʿUmar, the Commander of the Believers? Then I heard another man say: Here was the Commander of the Believers. So he made his mount kneel, then raised his voice and said: Peace be upon you from an imam, and may the hand of God bless that tattered leather; For whoever strives or rides the two wings of an ostrich To overtake what you sent forth yesterday, he will be outrun. You settled matters, then left after them Calamities in their sheaths, not yet burst open. That rider did not move, and he did not know who it was. We used to say that it was one of the jinn. Then ʿUmar returned from that Hajj, and he was stabbed and died). It is related from Sulaymān b. Yasār: (That the jinn lamented ʿUmar). Al-Ḥākim related from Mālik b. Dīnār that he said: A voice was heard at the mountain of Tabālah when ʿUmar ؓ was killed: Let him who would weep weep for Islam, For they are on the verge of being cast down, and the era is not old. The world has turned its back, and its good has turned its back, And he who was certain of the promise has grown weary of it.
