The caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb

Translation

✧ The Expedition against the Kurds Ibn Jarīr mentioned with his chain of transmission from Sayf, from his shaykhs, that a group of Kurds, to whom a faction of Persians had joined, gathered together. Abū Mūsā met them at a place in the land of Bayrūdh near the river Tīrā. Then he marched and encamped against them at Bayrūdh. They met in Ramaḍān between the river Tīrā and Manādhir. Al-Muhājir b. Ziyād stood up, having perfumed himself and sought martyrdom, and Abū Mūsā resolved the people to break their fast. Al-Muhājir advanced and fought a fierce battle until he was killed. God weakened the polytheists until they fortified themselves in fewness and humiliation. Al-Rabīʿ b. Ziyād’s grief for his brother al-Muhājir intensified, and his loss weighed heavily upon him. Abū Mūsā felt compassion for him and appointed him as his successor over them with an army. Abū Mūsā departed until he reached Iṣbahān and joined the Muslims who were besieging Jayy. When it was conquered, Abū Mūsā returned to al-Baṣrah, and al-Rabīʿ b. Ziyād al-Ḥārithī conquered Bayrūdh on the river Tīrā and seized what they had as booty. Abū Mūsā sent a delegation with the fifths. Ḍabbah b. Miḥṣan al-ʿAnazī asked to be in the delegation, but Abū Mūsā did not grant his request. Abū Mūsā had selected sixty youths from the captives of Bayrūdh. Ḍabbah went to ʿUmar complaining, and Abū Mūsā wrote to ʿUmar informing him. When Ḍabbah came to ʿUmar, he greeted him. ʿUmar said: “Who are you?” He told him. ʿUmar said: “No welcome and no greetings to you!” Ḍabbah said: “As for the welcome, it is from God, and as for the greetings, there is no family.” Then ʿUmar asked him about his situation. He said: “Abū Mūsā chose sixty youths from the sons of the village chiefs for himself. He has a slave girl who is served a large bowl in the morning and a large bowl in the evening, called ʿAqīlah. He has two qafīz measures and two signet rings. He delegated the affairs of al-Baṣrah to Ziyād b. Abī Sufyān, and he gave al-Ḥuṭayʾah a thousand as a reward.” ʿUmar summoned Abū Mūsā. When he arrived, ʿUmar kept him waiting for several days, then summoned him. ʿUmar asked Ḍabbah about what he had said. He said: “He took sixty youths for himself.” Abū Mūsā said: “I was shown them, and they had a ransom, so I ransomed them and distributed it among the Muslims.” Ḍabbah said: “He did not lie, nor did I.” Then ʿUmar said: “He has two qafīz measures.” Abū Mūsā said: “One qafīz is for my family, with which I feed them, and one qafīz is for the Muslims, in their hands, with which they receive their provisions.” Ḍabbah said: “He did not lie, nor did I.” When he mentioned ʿAqīlah, Abū Mūsā remained silent and did not offer an excuse. ʿUmar knew that Ḍabbah had told the truth about that. He said: “He appointed Ziyād.” Abū Mūsā said: “I saw in him sound judgment and nobility, so I entrusted my work to him.” He said: “He gave al-Ḥuṭayʾah a thousand.” Abū Mūsā said: “I closed his mouth with my own wealth so that he would not satirize me.” ʿUmar sent him back and ordered him to send Ziyād and ʿAqīlah to him. He did so. When Ziyād came to him, ʿUmar asked him about his condition, his stipend, the inheritance shares, the sunnahs, and the Qurʾān. He found him to be a jurist, so he sent him back and ordered the governors of al-Baṣrah to follow his opinion. He detained ʿAqīlah in al-Madīnah. ʿUmar said: “Indeed, Ḍabbah became angry with Abū Mūsā and parted from him in anger because he missed something of worldly matters. He told the truth about him and he lied, so his lie corrupted his truth. Beware of lying, for it leads to the Fire.”
