Translation
✧ The conquest of Mukrān at the hands of al-Ḥakam b. ʿAmr, Al-Ḥakam b. ʿAmr al-Taghlibī set out for Mukrān until he reached it, and Shihāb b. al-Mukhāriq, Suhayl b. ʿAdī, and ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿItbān joined him. They arrived just short of the river, while the people of Mukrān were on its bank. Their king sought reinforcements from the king of al-Sind, who supplied him with a dense army. They met the Muslims and were routed, and a great slaughter befell them in the battle. The Muslims pursued them, killing them for days until they reached the river. The Muslims returned to Mukrān and stayed there. Al-Ḥakam wrote to ʿUmar about the conquest and sent him the fifths with Ṣuḥār al-ʿAbdī. When he arrived in Madinah, ʿUmar asked him about Mukrān, and he said: "O Commander of the Faithful, it is a land whose plain is mountain, whose water is a trickle, whose dates are inferior, whose enemy is a hero, whose good is little, whose evil is long, where the many is little and the little is lost, and what lies beyond it is worse than it." ʿUmar said: "Are you a rhymester or an informant? No, by God, no army of mine will ever raid it." He wrote to Suhayl and al-Ḥakam b. ʿAmr: "Let no one of your troops cross beyond Mukrān." And he ordered them to sell the elephants that the Muslims had captured in the lands of Islam (and to divide their prices among the captors). Al-Ḥakam b. ʿAmr said about that: The widows have been filled, without boasting, with booty that came to them from Mukrān; it came to them after hunger and hardship, when winter was empty of smoke. I am not one whose deeds the army blames, nor is my sword blamed, nor my spear. On the morning when I drove back the rabble with a driving toward the wide Sind and the cities. And Mihrān is ours in what we desired, obedient, not slack of rein. Were it not for what my commander forbade, we would have cut through it to the furthest lands.
