Translation

✧ The conquest of Fasā and Dārābjird and the account of Sāriyah b. Zunaym That was in the year twenty-three. Sayf said on the authority of his shaykhs that Sāriyah b. Zunaym headed for Fasā and Dārābjird, and great gatherings of Persians and Kurds assembled against him, and a tremendous matter and a great multitude of them overwhelmed the Muslims. That night ʿUmar saw in his sleep—as a sleeper sees—their battle and their number at a time of day, and that they were in a desert, and there was a mountain there which, if they took refuge against it, they would only be attacked from one side. The next day he called out: 'Prayer in congregation!' Then, when it was the hour in which he had seen them assembled, he went out to the people, ascended the pulpit, addressed the people, and informed them of the description of what he had seen. Then he said: 'O Sāriyah, the mountain, the mountain!' Then he turned to them and said: 'God has soldiers, and perhaps some of them may convey it to them.' He said: So they did what ʿUmar said, and God granted them victory over their enemy, and they conquered the town. Another narration of the story: Sayf mentioned in another narration from his shaykhs that while ʿUmar was delivering the sermon on Friday, he suddenly said: 'O Sāriyah b. Zunaym, the mountain, the mountain!' So the Muslims took refuge at a mountain there, and the enemy could only come at them from one direction, so God gave them victory over them, and they conquered the town and took much booty. Among that was a chest of jewels, and Sāriyah asked the Muslims to give it to ʿUmar as a gift. When it reached him along with the fifths, the messenger arrived with the fifth and found ʿUmar standing with a staff in his hand while he was feeding the Muslims at their eating mats. When ʿUmar saw him, he said to him: 'Sit.' He did not recognize him. The man sat and ate with the people. When they finished, ʿUmar went to his house, and the man followed him and asked permission, and he gave him permission. There he found that bread, oil, and salt had been set out for him. He said: 'Come near and eat.' He said: I sat, and he began saying to his wife: 'Will you not come out, O woman, and eat?' She said: 'I hear the sound of a man with you.' He said: 'Are you not pleased that it should be said: Umm Kulthūm bt. ʿAlī and the wife of ʿUmar!' She said: 'How little that avails me.' Then he said to the man: 'Come near and eat, for if she were pleased it would be better than what you see.' So they ate. When they finished, he said: 'I am the messenger of Sāriyah b. Zunaym, O Commander of the Faithful.' He said: 'Welcome and greetings.' Then he drew him near until his knee touched his knee, then he asked him about the Muslims, then he asked him about Sāriyah b. Zunaym, and he informed him. Then he mentioned to him the matter of the chest of jewels, but he refused to accept it and ordered that it be returned to the army. The people of Madinah had asked Sāriyah's messenger about the conquest, and he informed them. They asked him: 'Did you hear a voice on the day of the battle?' He said: 'Yes, we heard a caller saying: O Sāriyah, the mountain! We had almost perished, so we took refuge there, and God granted us victory.'
