The caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb
Translation
✧ The conquest of Tawwaj When the people of al-Baṣrah who had set out towards Persia went forth as commanders over it, and with them was Sāriyah b. Zunaym al-Kinānī, they marched while the people of Persia were gathered at Tawwaj. The Muslims did not aim for them; rather, each commander turned towards the direction he had been commanded. That reached the people of Persia, so they dispersed to their lands just as the Muslims dispersed. Thus that was their defeat and the scattering of their affairs. Mujāshiʿ b. Masʿūd headed for Sābūr and Ardishīr Khurrah, and he and the Persians met at Tawwaj. They fought as long as Allāh willed, then the Persians were routed, and the Muslims killed them in whatever manner they wished, with every kind of killing, and took as booty what was in their camp. They besieged Tawwaj and conquered it, killing a great number of them and taking as booty what was in it. This is the latter Tawwaj; the former is the one which the armies of al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Ḥaḍramī had previously approached in the days of Ṭāwūs. Then they were called to the jizyah, so they returned and acknowledged it. Mujāshiʿ b. Masʿūd al-Sulamī sent the good tidings and the fifths to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb.
