The caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb

Translation

✧ The Conquest of Jurjān It has been said: Jurjān was only named so because Jurjān b. Lāwidh b. Sām b. Nūḥ built it. When Suwayd encamped at Qūmis, the people of various lands—among them Jurjān and Ṭabaristān and others—sent to him asking for peace on payment of the jizyah. He made peace with all of them and wrote for the people of each land a document of security and peace. Then Suwayd marched to Jurjān and encamped there at Basṭām, and he wrote to the king of Jurjān, who was Zurzān Ṣūl, and Zurzān Ṣūl corresponded with him and made peace with him over Jurjān on payment of the jizyah and the sufficiency of the war of Jurjān, and that Suwayd should aid him if he were victorious. Suwayd agreed to that, and Zurzān Ṣūl met him before he entered Jurjān, and he entered with him and encamped there until he collected the kharāj and named its frontier passes, and he blocked them with the Turks of Dihistān, and he lifted the jizyah from those who undertook to defend them and took it from the rest. It is said: Its conquest was in the year eighteen. And it is said: in the year thirty, in the time of ʿUthmān.
