The caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb

Translation

✧ The Conquest of al-Rayy Nuʿaym b. Muqarrin appointed Yazīd b. Qays al-Hamdānī as his deputy over Hamadhān, and he marched with the armies until he reached al-Rayy. There he encountered a large and formidable gathering of polytheists, and they fought at the foot of the mountain of al-Rayy. Al-Zaynabī had said to Nuʿaym: "The people are many and you are few, so send with me some cavalry, and I will enter their city with them through an entry they are unaware of, while you engage them. For when we come out upon them, they will not stand firm against you." So Nuʿaym sent with him cavalry by night, commanded by his nephew al-Mundhir b. ʿAmr. Al-Zaynabī brought them into the city while the people were unaware, and Nuʿaym attacked them by night, distracting them from their city. They fought and held firm against him until they heard the takbīr from behind them, then they fled. They were killed in such numbers that they were counted by stalks, and God granted the Muslims as spoils from al-Rayy something like what was in al-Madāʾin. Al-Zaynabī made peace with him over al-Rayy, and Nuʿaym appointed him as governor over them. Thus the nobility of al-Rayy remained with the family of al-Zaynabī. Nuʿaym destroyed their city, the one called al-ʿAtīqa, and ordered al-Zaynabī to build the new city of al-Rayy. Nuʿaym wrote to ʿUmar announcing the conquest and sent the fifths. The bearer of good tidings was al-Muḍārib al-ʿIjlī. Al-Muṣmughān corresponded with him seeking peace for something with which he would ransom himself from him over Dunbāwand, and he agreed to that. It has been said that the conquest of al-Rayy was at the hand of Qaraẓa b. Kaʿb, and it has been said that its conquest was in the year twenty-one, and something else has been said. And God knows best. Al-Wāqidī said: The conquest of Hamadhān and al-Rayy occurred only in the year twenty-three.
