Translation
✧ The year seventeen: ʿUmar dismissed Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ from al-Kūfah because a group from Banū Asad among the people of al-Kūfah spoke against Saʿd and said: Relieve us of him. So ʿUmar sent someone to ask the people of al-Kūfah about him, and they said: We know nothing about him but good. And a group remained silent and said nothing. A man called Usāmah said: He does not distribute equally. It was said: He only dismissed him in the year twenty, and it was said: rather in the year twenty-two. So he dismissed him and placed Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī in command, but they complained of him, so he transferred him to al-Baṣrah and placed al-Mughīrah in command over them. From ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr, [from Jābir b. Samurah], who said: The people of al-Kūfah complained about Saʿd to ʿUmar and said: He does not pray well. ʿUmar mentioned that to him, and he said: As for the prayer of the Messenger of God ﷺ, I used to lead them in prayer, prolonging in the first two and shortening in the last two. He said: That is what was thought of you, O Abū Isḥāq. So he sent with him a man—or men—to ask the people of al-Kūfah about him, and he did not leave any mosque without asking about him, and they would speak well of him until he entered a mosque of Banū ʿAbs. A man of theirs called Usāmah b. Qatādah stood up and said: "Since you adjure us, Saʿd did not march with equity, nor did he judge justly in the case." Saʿd said: By God, I will call down three things: O God, if this servant of yours is lying, having risen for show and reputation, then prolong his life, prolong his poverty, and expose him to trials. After that, when Usāmah was asked, he would say: An old man, greatly tried; the supplication of Saʿd has overtaken me." ʿAbd al-Malik said: I saw him afterwards, his eyebrows having fallen over his eyes from old age, and he would accost slave girls in the road, pinching them. It was said: He dismissed him from it and appointed over it ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAbd Allah b. ʿItbān, who had been Saʿd's deputy. And it was said: rather he appointed ʿAmr b. Yāsir over it. And Saʿd said regarding this matter: I accepted Islam as the fifth of five, and we had no food except the leaves of the hub lah until the corners of our mouths became ulcerated. I was the first man to shoot an arrow in the path of God, and the Messenger of God ﷺ joined for me his father and mother on the day of Uḥud, and he did not join them for anyone before me. Then Banū Asad say: He does not pray well. In another narration: You reproach me for my Islam? Then indeed I have failed and my deeds have gone astray. Then ʿUmar said to Saʿd: Whom did you leave as your deputy over al-Kūfah? He said: ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAbd Allah b. ʿItbān. So ʿUmar confirmed him as his deputy over al-Kūfah—he was a very old man from the noble companions, an ally of Banū al-Ḥublā of the Anṣār—and Saʿd remained dismissed without incapacity or treachery. He threatened those few men and nearly inflicted harm upon them, then he left that for fear that no one would complain about a governor.
