The caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb

حَجَّ عُمَرُ بِالنَّاسِ، وَاسْتَخْلَفَ عَلَى الْمَدِينَةِ زَيْدَ بْنَ ثَابِتٍ. قَالَ: وَكَانَ نَائِبَهُ عَلَى مَكَّةَ عَتَّابٌ، وَعَلَى الشَّامِ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ، وَعَلَى الْعِرَاقِ سَعْدٌ، وَعَلَى الطَّائِفِ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي الْعَاصِ، وَعَلَى الْيَمَنِ يَعْلَى بْنُ أُمَيَّةَ، وَعَلَى الْيَمَامَةِ وَالْبَحْرَيْنِ الْعَلَاءُ بْنُ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ، وَعَلَى عُمَانَ حُذَيْفَةُ بْنُ مِحْصَنٍ، وَعَلَى الْبَصْرَةِ الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ شُعْبَةَ، وَعَلَى الْمَوْصِلِ رِبْعِيُّ بْنُ الْأَفْكَلِ، وَعَلَى الْجَزِيرَةِ عِيَاضُ بْنُ غَنْمٍ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ.

Translation

✧ ʿUmar performed the pilgrimage with the people, and he appointed Zayd b. Thābit as his deputy over Madinah. He said: His deputy over Makkah was ʿAttāb, over Syria was Abū ʿUbaydah, over Iraq was Saʿd, over al-Ṭāʾif was ʿUthmān b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ, over Yemen was Yaʿlā b. Umayyah, over al-Yamāmah and al-Baḥrayn was al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Ḥaḍramī, over ʿUmān was Ḥudhayfah b. Miḥṣan, over al-Baṣrah was al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah, over al-Mawṣil was Ribʿī b. al-Afkal, and over al-Jazīrah was ʿIyāḍ b. Ghanm al-Ashʿarī.
