✧ THE CONQUEST OF ḤULWĀN When the battle was over, Hāshim b. ʿUtbah stayed at Jalūlāʾ by the order of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, as stated in his letter to Saʿd. ʿUmar ؓ had written to Saʿd: “If Allah grants you victory at Jalūlāʾ, send al-Qaʿqāʿ b. ʿAmr in pursuit of the people until he encamps at Ḥulwān, so that he may be a support for the Muslims, and Allah may secure for you your cultivated lands.” Al-Qaʿqāʿ b. ʿAmr advanced to Ḥulwān by the order of ʿUmar, to be a support for the Muslims there and a garrison against Kisrā wherever he fled. He marched and overtook the commander of the battle, who was Mihrān al-Rāzī, and killed him, while al-Fayruzān fled from him. When he reached Kisrā and informed him of what had happened at Jalūlāʾ and what befell the Persians after it, and how a hundred thousand of them were killed and Mihrān was overtaken and slain, Kisrā then fled from Ḥulwān to al-Rayy. When Yazdajird departed from Ḥulwān, he appointed Khashrashnūm as his successor over it. When al-Qaʿqāʿ reached the palace of Shīrīn, Khashrashnūm came out against him, and al-Zaynabī, the dihqān of Ḥulwān, advanced toward him. Al-Qaʿqāʿ met him and killed al-Zaynabī, while Khashrashnūm fled, and the Muslims took possession of Ḥulwān. Al-Qaʿqāʿ remained there until Saʿd moved to al-Kūfah, when al-Qaʿqāʿ joined him and left Qubādh as his successor over Ḥulwān, whose origin was Khurāsānian. They wrote to ʿUmar announcing the conquest and al-Qaʿqāʿ’s encampment at Ḥulwān, and they sought his permission to pursue them. He refused and said: “I would love that between the cultivated lands and the mountain there were a barrier so that they could not reach us nor we reach them. The cultivated lands are sufficient for us from the countryside. I have preferred the safety of the Muslims over the spoils.”
