The caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb
وَقْعَةُ مَرْجِ الرُّومِ أو وَقْعَةُ مَرْجِ رَاهِطٍ وَذَلِكَ أَنَّ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ خَرَجَ بِجُنُودِهِ وَمَعَهُ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ فَنَزَلَ بِمَرْجِ الرُّومِ، فَبَلَغَ الْخَبَرُ هِرَقْلَ، فَبَعَثَ تُوذَرَا الْبِطْرِيقَ، ثُمَّ أَمَدَّهُ بَشَنْسَ مَدَدًا لَهُ، فَنَزَلَ فِي جَبَلٍ عَلَى جُدَّةَ، ثُمَّ رَحَلَ فَتَبِعَهُ خَالِدٌ، فَاسْتَقْبَلَهُ يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ، فَاقْتَتَلُوا، وَلَحِقَ بِهِمْ خَالِدٌ فَأَخَذَهُمْ مِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ، فَأَبَادَهُمْ فَلَمْ يُفْلِتْ إِلَّا الشَّرِيدُ، وَقَسَّمُوا غَنَائِمَهُمْ بَيْنَ أَصْحَابِ يَزِيدَ وَخَالِدٍ، وَقَتَلَ تُوذَرَا، وَانْصَرَفَ يَزِيدُ إِلَى دِمَشْقَ، وَخَالِدٌ إِلَى أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ بَعْدَ خُرُوجِ خَالِدٍ فِي أَثَرِ تُوذَرَا وَشَنْسَ، فَاقْتَتَلُوا بِمَرْجِ الرُّومِ، فَقُتِلَ شَنْسُ وَخَلْقٌ عَظِيمٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ حَتَّى امْتَلَأَ الْمَرْجُ مِنْ قَتْلَاهُمْ، فَأَنْتَنَتِ الْأَرْضُ، وَهَرَبَ مَنْ هَرَبَ مِنْهُمْ، فَرَكِبَ أَكْتَافَهُمْ إِلَى حِمْصَ.
Translation
✧ The Battle of Marj al-Rūm or the Battle of Marj Rāhiṭ That is because Abū ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrāḥ went out with his troops, and with him was Khālid b. al-Walīd, and he encamped at Marj al-Rūm. The news reached Heraclius, so he sent the patrician Tūdharā, then reinforced him with Shanas as a support for him. He encamped on a mountain overlooking Juddah. Then he departed, and Khālid pursued him. Yazīd b. Abī Sufyān met him, and they fought. Khālid caught up with them and took them from behind, and he exterminated them, so that none escaped except the one who fled. They divided their spoils between the companions of Yazīd and Khālid. He killed Tūdharā, and Yazīd returned to Damascus, while Khālid returned to Abū ʿUbaydah after Khālid had gone out in pursuit of Tūdharā and Shanas. They fought at Marj al-Rūm, and Shanas and a great multitude of his companions were killed, until the meadow was filled with their slain, and the ground stank. Those of them who fled took to their shoulders toward Ḥimṣ.
