Translation

✧ Glimpses of his forbearance, humility, and asceticism Ibn ʿAsākir transmitted from Unaysah who said: (Abū Bakr stayed among us for three years before he was appointed caliph, and one year after he was appointed, and the slave girls of the neighborhood would bring their sheep to him and he would milk them for them). And from Maymūn b. Mihrān who said: (A man came to Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq and said: Peace be upon you, O caliph of the Messenger of God. He said: From among all these people?!). And from Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Ghifārī: (ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb used to look after an old, blind woman in one of the outskirts of Madinah at night, drawing water for her and attending to her needs. Whenever he came to her, he found that someone else had preceded him and had already done what she wanted. He came to her more than once so as not to be preceded, so ʿUmar lay in wait for him, and it turned out to be Abū Bakr who was coming to her, and he was caliph on that day. ʿUmar said: By my life, it is you). And from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Aṣbahānī who said: (Al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī came to Abū Bakr while he was on the pulpit of the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: Come down from my father's seat. He said: You have spoken the truth; it is your father's seat. He seated him in his lap and wept. ʿAlī said: By God, this was not at my instruction. He said: You have spoken the truth; by God, I did not suspect you). And from Abū Sarīḥah, who said: I heard ʿAlī ؓ say from the pulpit: Indeed Abū Bakr is compassionate, with a penitent heart. Qays said: I saw Abū Bakr ؓ holding the tip of his tongue and saying: This has brought me to the waterholes. Al-Ḥasan said: Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq said: Would that I were a tree that is trimmed and then eaten. Abū ʿImrān al-Jawnī said: Abū Bakr said: Would that I were a hair on the side of a believing servant. Abū Bakr ؓ was the most merciful of people to the community after its Prophet ﷺ Aḥmad and al-Tirmidhī narrated from Anas b. Mālik who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "The most merciful of my community to my community is Abū Bakr, and the sternest of them in the matter of God is ʿUmar, and the most truthful of them in modesty is ʿUthmān, and the most learned of them in the lawful and the unlawful is Muʿādh b. Jabal, and the most knowledgeable of them in inheritance shares is Zayd b. Thābit, and the best reciter of them is Ubayy b. Kaʿb, and every community has a trustworthy one, and the trustworthy one of this community is Abū ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrāḥ." Abū Yaʿlā transmitted it from the ḥadīth of Ibn ʿUmar and added in it, "and the best judge of them is ʿAlī." Al-Daylamī transmitted it in "Musnad al-Firdaws" from the ḥadīth of Shaddād b. Aws and added: "And Abū Dharr is the most ascetic of my community and the most truthful of it, and Abū al-Dardāʾ is the most devout worshipper of my community and the most God-fearing of it, and Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān is the most forbearing of my community and the most generous of it." And from Abū Bakr b. Ḥafṣ who said: (It reached me that Abū Bakr used to fast in summer and break fast in winter).
