Translation
✧ SECTION [His character in the pre-Islamic era ؓ ] Abū Bakr was among the most chaste of people in the pre-Islamic era. Ibn ʿAsākir transmitted with a sound chain of narration from ʿĀʾishah ؓ that she said: (By Allah, Abū Bakr never recited poetry at all, neither in the pre-Islamic era nor in Islam. He and ʿUthmān abandoned drinking wine in the pre-Islamic era). Abū Nuʿaym transmitted with a good chain of narration from her that she said: (Abū Bakr made wine forbidden upon himself in the pre-Islamic era). Ibn ʿAsākir transmitted from ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr that he said: (Abū Bakr never recited poetry at all). Ibn ʿAsākir transmitted from Abū al-ʿĀliyah al-Riyāḥī that he said: It was said to Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq in a gathering of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: Did you drink wine in the pre-Islamic era? He said: I seek refuge in Allah. It was said: And why? He said: I used to protect my honor and preserve my manly virtue, for whoever drank wine would be wasteful of his honor and his manly virtue. He said: That reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: "Abū Bakr has spoken the truth, Abū Bakr has spoken the truth," twice. It is mursal, strange in both chain and text.
