Translation
✧ The report of Dūmat al-Jandal. When Khālid had finished with ʿAyn al-Tamr, he set out for Dūmat al-Jandal, appointing ʿUwaymir b. al-Kāhin al-Aslamī as his deputy over ʿAyn al-Tamr. When the people of Dūmat al-Jandal heard of his march toward them, they sent to their confederates among Bahrāʾ, Tanūkh, Kalb, Ghassān, and al-Ḍajāʿim, and they came to them. Ibn al-Ayham was over Ghassān and Tanūkh, and Ibn al-Ḥidrijān over al-Ḍajāʿim. The people at Dūmah had assembled around two men: Ukaydir b. ʿAbd al-Malik and al-Jūdī b. Rabīʿah, and the two disagreed. Ukaydir said, "I know Khālid better than anyone. No one has a luckier omen than he in war, and no one is more resolute. No people, whether few or many, ever see Khālid's face but they are routed before him. So obey me and make peace with the people." They refused him, and he said, "I will not join you in warring against Khālid." He left them. Khālid sent ʿĀṣim b. ʿAmr against him; he intercepted him and took him. When he was brought to Khālid, he ordered that his neck be struck, and he took what was with him. Then Khālid and the people of Dūmat al-Jandal faced each other, with al-Jūdī b. Rabīʿah over them, each tribe with its chief from the Arabs. Khālid placed Dūmah between himself and the army of ʿIyāḍ b. Ghanm. The army of the Arabs split into two groups: one toward Khālid and one toward ʿIyāḍ. Khālid charged those before him, and ʿIyāḍ charged the others. Khālid captured al-Jūdī, and al-Aqraʿ b. Ḥābis captured Wadīʿah. The Arabs fled to the fortress and filled it, and a number of them remained for whom it was too narrow. The Banū Tamīm turned to those outside the fortress and gave them provisions, so some of them escaped. Khālid came and struck the necks of those he found outside the fortress, and he ordered that the neck of al-Jūdī and those captives with him be struck, except for the captives of the Banū Kalb, because ʿĀṣim b. ʿAmr, al-Aqraʿ b. Ḥābis, and the Banū Tamīm granted them protection. Khālid said to them, "What is it with me and you? Do you preserve the custom of the Jāhiliyyah and neglect the command of Islam?!" ʿĀṣim b. ʿAmr said to him, "Do you envy them safety and drive them into Satan's hands?" Then Khālid surrounded the gate and did not leave it until he tore it out. They stormed the fortress and killed the fighting men in it, and took the offspring captive. They sold them among themselves to the highest bidder. On that day, Khālid bought the daughter of al-Jūdī, who was described as beautiful, and he stayed at Dūmat al-Jandal. He sent al-Aqraʿ back to al-Anbār. Then Khālid returned to al-Ḥīrah, and its people met him from the land with drumming and clapping. He heard a man among them say to his companion, "Pass us by, for this is a day on which evil rejoices."
