Translation
✧ Then the Battle of Ullays took place, also in Ṣafar. This was because Khālid had killed on the day of al-Walajah a group of Bakr b. Wāʾil, from the Christian Arabs who had been with the Persians. Their clans gathered, the most enraged among them being ʿAbd al-Aswad al-ʿIjlī, whose son had been killed the previous day. They wrote to the Persians, and Ardashīr sent them an army as reinforcement. They assembled at a place called Ullays. While they had set out a table with food on it, intending to eat it, Khālid took them by surprise with his army. When they saw him, some of them suggested eating the food and paying no attention to Khālid. The commander of Kisrā, whose name was Jābān, said: "Rather, we should go out to meet him." But they did not listen to him. When Khālid dismounted, he advanced before his army and called out at the top of his voice to the brave men among the Bedouins there: "Where is so-and-so? Where is so-and-so?" All of them shrank from him except a man called Mālik b. Qays, of the Banū Jidhrah, who came out to face him. Khālid said to him: "O son of an evil woman, what emboldened you against me from among them, when there is no loyalty in you?" Then he struck him and killed him. The Persians fled from the food and rose to their weapons. They fought a very fierce battle. The polytheists were awaiting the arrival of Bahman as reinforcement from the king, so they were strong, determined, and persistent in fighting. The Muslims endured with great patience. Khālid said: "O Allah, I vow to You that if You grant us victory over them, I will not leave anyone of them whom I can overcome until I make their river flow with their blood." Then Allah, mighty and majestic, granted the Muslims victory over them. Khālid's herald called out: "Take prisoners, take prisoners. Kill only those who refuse to be captured." The cavalry brought them in droves, driving them along. Khālid assigned men to strike their necks in the river. He did this to them for a day and a night, and he sought them the next day and the day after. Whenever one of them was brought, his neck was struck in the river. He had diverted the water of the river to another place. Some of the commanders said to him: "The river will not flow with their blood until you release the water onto the blood so that it flows with it, and thus you fulfill your oath." So he released it, and the river flowed with fresh blood. For that reason it was called the River of Blood to this day. The mills turned with that water mixed with fresh blood, enough to suffice the entire army for three days. The number of those killed reached seventy thousand. When Khālid had routed the army and the people who returned had come back, Khālid turned to the food that they had set out to eat. He said to the Muslims: "This is spoils, so dismount and eat." The people dismounted and ate supper. The Persians had placed a lot of thin bread on their food. The desert dwellers among the Bedouins who saw it said: "What are these patches?" They thought they were cloth. Those who knew about such things from the people of the countryside and the cities said to them: "Have you not heard of thin bread?" They said: "Yes." They said: "This is thin bread." So they called it ruqāq that day; the Arabs used to call it al-qarn. Sayf b. ʿUmar said, from ʿAmr b. Muḥammad, from al-Shaʿbī, from someone who reported from Khālid, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave the people as spoils on the day of Khaybar the bread, cooked food, roasted meat, and what they ate other than that, without taking possession of it as personal property.
