The caliphate of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ᴿᴬ
Translation
✧ Then there was the affair of al-Walajah, also in Safar of this year, according to what Ibn Jarir mentioned. That is because when the news of what had happened at al-Madhar, of the killing of Qaran and his companions, reached Ardashir, who was then the king of the Persians, he sent a brave commander called al-Andarzaghar. He was one of the sons of the Sawad, born in al-Mada'in and raised there, and he reinforced him with another army under a commander called Bahman Jadhawayh. They marched until they reached a place called al-Walajah. Khalid heard of them and marched with the troops that were with him, and he instructed the one he left in charge there to be cautious and not negligent. He encamped against Andarzaghar and those who gathered with him, and they met at al-Walajah. They fought a fierce battle, more intense than what came before, until both parties thought that patience had run out. And he deemed his ambush slow—the ambush he had set for them behind him in two places. It was only a little while before the two ambushes came out from here and there, and the ranks of the non-Arabs fled. Khalid took them from their front, and the two ambushes from behind them, so that no man among them knew where his companion was killed. Andarzaghar fled from the battle and died of thirst. Khalid stood among the people as an orator, making them desire the lands of the non-Arabs and making them disdain the lands of the Arabs, and said: 'Do you not see what is here of foods? By Allah, if the struggle in the path of Allah and the call to Islam were not incumbent upon us, and there were nothing but livelihood, it would still be the right opinion that we fight over this fertile land until we are more entitled to it, and we assign hunger and scarcity to those who undertake it among those who are sluggish about what you are upon.' Then he took the fifth of the spoils, divided four-fifths among the victors, sent the fifth to al-Siddiq, took captive those he took among the families of the fighters, and imposed the jizyah on the peasants. Sayf b. Umar said, from Amr, from al-Sha'bi, who said: On the day of al-Walajah, Khalid fought in single combat a man from the non-Arabs who was equal to a thousand men, and he killed him. Then he leaned on him, and his lunch was brought, and he ate it while leaning on him—meaning between the two ranks.
