Translation

✧ Section on the events that occurred in this year. The compilation of the Qurʾān In it, al-Ṣiddīq commanded Zayd b. Thābit to compile the Qurʾān from palm branches, stones, and the hearts of men, and that was after the killing among the Qurʾān reciters had become widespread on the Day of al-Yamāmah, as is established by the hadith in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī. The marriage of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib to Umāmah bt. Zaynab In it, ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib married Umāmah bt. Zaynab bt. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and she was from Abū al-ʿĀṣ b. al-Rabīʿ b. ʿAbd Shams al-Umawī, and her father had died in this year. This is the one whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to carry during the prayer, placing her down when he prostrated and lifting her when he stood. In it, ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb married ʿĀtikah bt. Zayd b. ʿAmr b. Nufayl, and she was his paternal cousin, and he loved her and was fond of her. He did not prevent her from going out to the prayer, but he disliked her going out. One night he sat for her on the road in darkness, and when she passed, he struck her buttocks with his hand, so she returned to her house and did not go out after that. She had previously been married to his brother Zayd b. al-Khaṭṭāb, as it is said, and he was killed, leaving her. Before Zayd, she had been married to ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr, and he was killed, leaving her. When ʿUmar died, al-Zubayr married her after him, and when he was killed, ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib proposed to her, and she said: "I desire you but I fear death for you." She refused to marry until she died. ʿUmar's purchase of his freedman Aslam In it, ʿUmar purchased his freedman Aslam, and from him came one of the leaders of the successors, and his son Zayd b. Aslam was one of the trustworthy and eminent. Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq led the people in the pilgrimage In it, Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ؓ led the people in the pilgrimage, and he appointed ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān as his deputy over Madinah. Ibn Isḥāq narrated it with his chain from Abū Mājidah, who said: Abū Bakr led us in the pilgrimage during his caliphate in the year twelve. He mentioned a hadith concerning retaliation for cutting off an ear, and that ʿUmar ruled in that matter by the command of al-Ṣiddīq. Ibn Isḥāq said: Some people said: Abū Bakr did not perform the pilgrimage during his caliphate, and he sent ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb or ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf to lead the pilgrimage in the year twelve. Abū Bakr's ؓ ʿumrah in Rajab Among the events in this year [was Abū Bakr's ؓ ʿumrah in Rajab]. Abū Bakr performed ʿumrah in Rajab, and he entered Makkah in the forenoon. He came to his house while Abū Quḥāfah was sitting at the door of his house with young men, talking to them. It was said to him: "This is your son." He rose to his feet, and Abū Bakr hastened to make his mount kneel, then dismounted while it was still standing. He kept saying: "O father, do not stand." Then he embraced him and kissed him between the eyes, weeping with joy at his arrival. ʿAttāb b. Asīd, Suhayl b. ʿAmr, ʿIkrimah b. Abī Jahl, and al-Ḥārith b. Hishām came to Makkah, and they greeted him: "Peace be upon you, O successor of the Messenger of Allah," and they all shook hands with him. Abū Bakr wept when they mentioned the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. They also greeted Abū Quḥāfah. Abū Quḥāfah said: "O ʿAtīq, these are the nobles, so treat them well." Abū Bakr said: "O father, there is no power and no strength except with Allah. I have been burdened with a great matter for which I have no strength or ability except through Allah." He said: "Does anyone complain of an injustice?" But no one came to him. And the people praised their governor.
