Translation
✧ As for the account of Abū Shajarah b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā al-Sulamī — he is the son of al-Khansāʾ — he was among those of Sulaym who had apostatized, while some of them remained firm in Islam with Maʿn b. Ḥājiz, who was a commander appointed by Abū Bakr. When Khālid marched against Ṭulayḥah, he wrote to Maʿn to join him with those of Banū Sulaym who remained with him in Islam, so he set out and left his brother Ṭurayfah b. Ḥājiz as his deputy over his charge. Abū Shajarah said when he apostatized: The heart awoke from its passion for Mayy and grew restrained, and heeded the censurers therein and saw clearly. Lo, you who boast of the multitude of your people, Yet your share of them is to be wronged and subdued. Ask the people about us on every day of dread, When we meet, armored and bareheaded. Are we not those who hand the bridle to the one who rears, And thrust in the fray when death stands desolate? So I dyed my spear from Khālid's squadron, And I hope after that to live long. Then Abū Shajarah embraced Islam. When it was the time of ʿUmar, he came to Madinah and saw ʿUmar distributing among the poor, and he said: "Give me, for I am in need." He said: "And who are you?" He said: "I am Abū Shajarah b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā al-Sulamī." He said: "O enemy of God, no, by God! Are you not the one who says: So I dyed my spear from Khālid's squadron, And I hope after that to live long? And he began striking him on the head with the whip until he outran him to his she-camel, mounted her, joined his people, and said: Abū Ḥafṣ withheld from us his bounty, While every seeker of gifts one day has leaves. — in some verses.
