The caliphate of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ᴿᴬ
ثُمَّ لَمَّا اقْتَرَبَ مِنْ جُيُوشِ الْمُرْتَدَّةِ - ✧ Mention of the apostasy of the people of al-Baḥrayn and their return to Islam Their affair was that the Messenger of God ﷺ had sent al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Ḥaḍramī to its king al-Mundhir b. Sāwā al-ʿAbdī, and he became Muslim at his hands and established Islam and justice among them. When the Messenger of God ﷺ died, al-Mundhir died a little after him. ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ had been present with him in his illness, and he said to him: "O ʿAmr, did the Messenger of God ﷺ assign anything of his wealth to a sick person?" He said: "Yes, a third." He said: "What should I do with it?" He said: "If you wish, you may give it as charity to your relatives, or if you wish to the poor, or if you wish you may make it a perpetual charity after you, an inalienable endowment." He said: "I dislike making it like the baḥīrah, the sāʾibah, the waṣīlah, and the ḥāmī, but I will give it as charity." He did so and died, and ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ used to marvel at him. When al-Mundhir died, the people of al-Baḥrayn apostatized and made al-Gharūr king over them, that is al-Mundhir b. al-Nuʿmān b. al-Mundhir. One of their people said: "If Muḥammad were a prophet, he would not have died." The stance of the village of Juwāthā against apostasy and al-Jārūd b. al-Muʿallā No town in it remained steadfast except a village called Juwāthā. It was the first village whose people from among the people of apostasy established the Friday prayer, as is established in al-Bukhārī from Ibn ʿAbbās. The apostates besieged them and pressed them hard until they were denied provisions and suffered severe hunger, until God granted relief. A man of them called ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥadhaf, one of the Banū Bakr b. Kilāb, when hunger pressed hard on him, said: Alā ablight Abā Bakrin rasūlan wa-fityāna al-Madīnati ajmaʿīnā Fa-hal lakum ilā qawmin kirāmin Quʿūdin fī Juwāthā muḥṣarīnā Ka-anna dimāʾahum fī kulli fajjin Shuʿāʿu al-shamsi yaghshā al-nāẓirīnā Tawakkalnā ʿalā al-Raḥmāni innā Wajadnā al-ṣabra li-l-mutawakkilīnā A man of their nobles rose among them, namely al-Jārūd b. al-Muʿallā, who had been among those who emigrated to the Messenger of God ﷺ as a preacher. He gathered them and said: "O people of ʿAbd al-Qays, I am asking you about a matter, so inform me if you know it, and do not answer me if you do not know it." They said: "Ask." He said: "Do you know that God had prophets before Muḥammad?" They said: "Yes." He said: "Do you know it or do you see it?" They said: "We know it." He said: "What happened to them?" They said: "They died." He said: "Then Muḥammad ﷺ died as they died, and I bear witness that there is no god but God, and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of God." They said: "We too bear witness that there is no god but God, and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of God, and you are the best of us and our master." They remained firm in their Islam and left the rest of the people in their state. The dispatch of al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Ḥaḍramī to al-Baḥrayn Al-Ṣiddīq, ؓ, as we mentioned before, sent al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Ḥaḍramī to them. When he drew near al-Baḥrayn, Thumāmah b. Athāl came to him in a great host, and all the commanders of those regions came and joined the army of al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Ḥaḍramī, and al-ʿAlāʾ honored them, welcomed them, and treated them well. The miracles of al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Ḥaḍramī Al-ʿAlāʾ was one of the leading Companions, learned and devout, whose supplications were answered. In this campaign it happened that he halted at a place, and the people had not settled on the ground before the camels bolted with all the army's provisions, their tents, and their drink, leaving them on the ground with nothing but their clothes. That was at night, and they could not catch a single camel. The people were overwhelmed with worry and grief beyond measure or description, and some began commending one another. Then the caller of al-ʿAlāʾ called out, and the people gathered around him. He said: "O people, are you not Muslims? Are you not in the path of God? Are you not the helpers of God?" They said: "Yes." He said: "Then rejoice, for by God, God will not forsake those who are in a state like yours." The call to the dawn prayer was made when dawn broke, and he prayed with the people. When he finished the prayer, he knelt on his knees, and the people knelt, and he devoted himself to supplication and raised his hands, and the people did the same, until the sun rose. The people watched the shimmering mirage of the sun flashing time after time while he strove in supplication. When it flashed the third time, God had created beside them a great pool of clear water. He walked to it and the people walked with him, and they drank and bathed. No sooner had the day risen than the camels returned from every pass with all that was on them, and the people did not miss so much as a thread of their belongings. They watered the camels again and again after the first drink. This was among the signs of God that the people witnessed in this expedition. Then when he drew near the armies of the apostates — and they had gathered and collected a huge host — he halted, and they halted, and they spent the night encamped close to one another. While the Muslims were in the night, al-ʿAlāʾ heard loud voices in the army of the apostates. He said: "Who is the man who will reveal to us the news of these people?" ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥadhaf rose and entered among them and found them drunk, not reasoning from drink. He returned to him and told him. Al-ʿAlāʾ mounted at once, he and the army with him, and they fell upon them and killed them with a great slaughter. Few of them escaped, and he seized all their wealth, supplies, and baggage, and it was a great and momentous spoil. The killing of al-Ḥuṭam b. Ḍubayʿah Al-Ḥuṭam b. Ḍubayʿah — the brother of the Banū Qays b. Thaʿlabah, one of the nobles of the people — was asleep. He rose bewildered when the Muslims burst in upon them, and he mounted his steed, but his stirrup broke. He began to say: "Who will fix my stirrup for me?" A man of the Muslims came in the night and said: "I will fix it for you; raise your leg." When he raised it, he struck him with the sword and cut it off with his foot. He said to him: "Finish me off." He said: "I will not do it." He fell down slain; everyone who passed him he asked to kill him, but they refused, until Qays b. ʿĀṣim passed by him, and he said to him: "I am al-Ḥuṭam, so kill me." He killed him. When he saw his leg cut off, he regretted killing him and said: "What a disgrace! Had I known what was wrong with him, I would not have moved him." The raid of al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Ḥaḍramī on Dārīn Then the Muslims rode in pursuit of the defeated, killing them at every ambush and road. Those of them who fled, or most of them, went in the sea to Dārīn, riding ships to it. Then al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Ḥaḍramī began dividing the spoil and giving the extra shares, and when he finished that he said to the Muslims: "Let us go to Dārīn to raid the enemies there." They answered quickly, and he marched with them until he reached the seashore to embark on ships. But he saw that the crossing was long, and that they would not reach them by ship before God's enemies fled. So he plunged into the sea with his horse, saying: "O Most Merciful of the merciful, O Forbearing, O Generous, O One, O Eternal, O Living, O Reviver of the dead, O Living, O Self-Subsisting, there is no god but You, O our Lord." He commanded the army to say that and to plunge in, and they did so. God caused them to cross the bay, walking on something like soft sand, over which the water did not submerge the camels' hooves or reach the horses' knees. Its crossing for ships was a day and a night, and he crossed it to the other shore, fought his enemy, subdued them, and seized their spoils. Then he returned and crossed it to the other side, back to his original position, all in one day. He left no one of the enemy to report, and he drove off the women and children, the livestock, and the wealth. The Muslims lost nothing in the sea except the saddle-girth of the horse of a Muslim man, and even so al-ʿAlāʾ returned and brought it to him. Then he divided the spoils of the Muslims among them, and the horseman received two thousand and the foot soldier one thousand, despite the size of the army. He wrote to al-Ṣiddīq informing him of that, and al-Ṣiddīq sent him thanks for what he had done. A man of the Muslims, namely ʿAfīf b. al-Mundhir, said concerning their crossing of the sea: A-lam tara anna Allāha dhallala baḥrahu wa-anzala bi-l-kuffāri iḥdā al-jalāʾili Daʿawnā alladhī shaqqa al-biḥāra fa-jāʾanā bi-aʿjaba min falqi al-biḥāri al-awāʾili Among the miracles God wrought through al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Ḥaḍramī Sayf b. ʿUmar al-Tamīmī mentioned that among the Muslims in these stations and scenes that they witnessed of the affair of al-ʿAlāʾ and the miracles God wrought through his hands was a man of the people of Hajar, a monk, who then became Muslim. It was said to him: "What called you to Islam?" He said: "I feared that if I did not, God would transform me, because of the signs I witnessed." He said: "I heard a supplication in the air at the time before dawn." They said: "And what was it?" He said: "O God, You are the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate; there is no god other than You; the Originator, nothing is before You; the Everlasting, not heedless; the Living who does not die; the Creator of what is seen and what is unseen; every day You are engaged in some affair; O God, You have known everything with knowledge." He said: "So I knew that the people were not aided by the angels except that they were upon God's command." He said: "His Islam was good, and the Companions used to listen to him."
